Best practices for creating a will?

You’ll have to ask Napoleon.

I like @Shandril’s advice and would go that route if starting my first will today. I had a lawyer do my first will in the 80’s, and I’ve re-written it myself as years passed, or our location/circumstances changed. Once you’ve had one done, there are only minor changes amongst most states (excluding CA and NY). Louisiana is a whole 'nother kettle of sacalait, and I feel @TravelerMSY’s pain.

What the first will shows you is to consider a LOT of circumstances. My only additional advice is to always number the pages (including the total number of pages on the first page), and to always have a beneficiary of last resort, unless you’re willing to accept a small chance that Uncle Sam will get your money.
