CD Discussion Thread

I guess the 5 year maturity time. I may not live until 2025…

That is certainly NOT what I meant. It is far too short . . . at least in my opinion.

I’m nervous about my PSECU activity being only about 33 months long . . . 33 months until maturity of the CD. Five years, like at TFCU, would be a whole lot better. Course I’m doing PSECU regardless because the rate of interest is higher.

But only eight months!! That would not be my choice. I want a longer lock-in than that, especially for jumbo funds.

Well, if I’m around then it’ll be a miracle. Nevertheless, ya gotta think positively. And if I kick the bucket my heirs will be able to access the funds penalty free.

So I’m going to think about my Jumbo money again
.
We have those Sharonview 4% that mature 7/23. I also have a couple Navy 3.5% mature 7/24.
So I guess I could go TFCU 2.98% for the 2025. With these my heirs will be set. :relaxed:

Good for you, pattyb53!! That’s looking on the positive side!!

Only thing is remember, as always on these high rate CDs, time is most likely of the essence.

You are fortunate to have the jumbo dough it takes to access that high rate. But a whole lot of other people have it, too. And that deal remains on Ken’s front page.

The most recent comments there are illuminating and worth your time to read. I did suggest a week ago you become a TFCU member pronto. If you did that, you are in great shape.

I didn’t take your advice about joining last week.

Just checked & rate is still good today. I will go ahead & start the process to join now & see how it goes. Another holiday!

Yes & weekend to boot!! TFCU is not open on Saturdays either…

Got the application completed & I selected to mail a check to open Savings ($5) & fund CD. By early Tuesday funds will be in Alliant CU. The application shows CD with maturity date listed today, 2/15/2025.

By mailing the funds I can send all the required materials. Seems they want 2 valid photo ID’s & a utility bill.
Do you think I would be safe to go ahead & mail the check today?

That is exactly what I would be doing in your situation, pattyb53.

You might get the deal. You might not get the deal.

But if you fail to try, I can 100% guarantee you that you will NOT get the deal!! Go for it!!

Again, that is what I would do. You have even an extra advantage since, from where you live, mail will take longer and, therefore, GIVE you a thicker cushion on time.

Hope it all comes true for you. Good luck!

ETA

One additional thought on this:

I would definitely mail today in order to obtain today’s postmark on your letter. It might make a difference . . . it might not.

But if they withdraw the deal you will have responded timely (i.e., today) to an deal which is active on their website today. That is a strong position in which to place yourself. So, yes, get that letter into the mail pronto!

If it were me I would take the letter into the post office and request it be hand cancelled with postmark dated today. But then I’m a little wacky and I would understand if others think that is excessive.:grinning:

Excessive? No, not thorough enough!
Be sure to get a picture of the letter once postmarked.

I stuck the letter in the receiving slot, open until 4:30… Saturday, so no one at the PO to talk with. No postmark, no picture, but letter is on the way. :relaxed:

A warning from Ken

If you are a CD purchaser you certainly should read, and heed, this warning:

Ken warns his readers who purchase certificates of deposit

Good luck to all.

in the panic to secure high yields, I guess some may forgo all common sense. But 3.2% 9-month no penalty CD is over 1% above anything else available currently at the most competitive banks and CUs. If an unknown bank offers this, it’s hard to fathom how it can NOT be a scam.

Worked out!!

TFCU is great… They got my letter today with check for CD & $5 Savings. They did all the paperwork with docu signature. My account # will come by mail. So even with Saturday mail & holiday it took until Wednesday to arrive. That’s CA to VA.

I might call on Friday to see if they will give me account # over phone.

Congrats, pattyb53. You did GREAT!!

For others:

I just re-checked the TFCU rate page. Contrary to all my expectations, those high CD rates remain even now in effect (I was so full of prunes, but I really did not anticipate those high rates enduring this long).:grinning:

Hope others are able to seize advantage. This lollipop cannot continue to exist forever.

It is important this be understood:

USPS mail is delivered neither on Sundays nor on holidays.

BUT, USPS mail still is moving through the system on those days. It is being transported.

Hence, to use pattyb53’s situation as an example:

It was important for her to inject her letter to TFCU into the mail stream last Saturday, as she did, allowing it to be processed and begin its travel to Virginia that same day. Had she missed her local outgoing mail last Saturday, her letter would not have begun its travel until the following Tuesday, delaying its arrival significantly.

I do not wanna say this, but:

Gosh things are bleak out there. I “don’t got bupkes!!”

However:

pattyb53’s TFCU CD deal continues to hold as of this morning, and it is a spectacular deal at this point, in particular the jumbo.

Here is a link to the TFCU rate page

Also, Andrews continues to offer you over 3%, provided you have at least $1000 to invest. But you must make an 84 month commitment.

Here is a link to that Andrews CD deal

That’s all I have and boy it that thin soup!! Can anyone else point to a great CD deal? I surely hope so.

TFCU…Signed, sealed & delivered Today!

I can sign into my account now. I mailed my envelope on 2/15/20, with signed jumbo check dated that day. So today I see in my acct that the CD is opened on that date & matures 2/15/25.

Ally Bank announced a 13-month CD with 2.10% rate. Nothing great but better than the 2.00% on their 12-month CD.

@harish7631 Where did you find this 13 mo 2.1% deal? I’m not seeing it on their website.
