Try closing one eye
Because geometry.
Iâve tried, but it doesnât quite work. Possibly because my brain is already trained with two eyes, or maybe because both eyes are not necessary to gauge distance. The human eye is more like a LIDAR scanner than a digital camera, because it constantly moves, plus we can move our head. The motion can lead the brain to compose 3D and gauge distance.
Try wearing an eye patch at the batting cage.
I understand that much. Because itâs a computer âseeingâ the images it still needs considerably more software work to interpret them, whether itâs one camera or two.
The example you show and the references to the eyes are about the human eye seeing things or seeing pictures. In the case of cars, weâre talking about a machine âseeingâ and interpreting.
Cameras can deduce depth with the help of image-processing algorithms but their measurements are subject to uncertainty.
Lidar uses time of flight for high-speed distance measurement and it has a higher spatial resolution. Lidar can resolve details fine enough to recognize obstacles, or even determine which way a pedestrian is facing.
The chief drawback for lidar has been size and expense, but it seems to be getting less and less expensive.
It has been in use for a long time by at least Mercedes, Subaru, and Toyota and here is the source and a better example. It works pretty well and can detect cars and pedestrians.
LIDAR could be better if it can provide a high resolution 3D mesh, but I (as a software engineer) donât see how that makes it any easier to interpret the data than from two cameras, which can also provide a 3D mesh and color. Also google âlidar vs stereo cameraâ and youâll see itâs not yet settled which one is better.
I understand cameras are in use. They are in use in vehicles driven by people using their eyes for collision avoidance.
Adding cameras to human vision is of course useful but does not prove they are fine by themselves.
The question is if cameras are sufficient for autonomous vehicles.
Itâs not whether one or the other is better, but whether lidar should be used in addition to cameras.
Currently, evidence suggests that lidar or some other detection system is necessary in addition to cameras for autonomous vehicles.
Airo is a concept that offers an all-electric design, resulting in zero emissions. Taking it one step further, Airo is equipped with advanced HEPA filter technology that actually filters air as it runs beneath the car.
LOL
Of course âzero emissionsâ is baloney.
Caterpillar is starting to electrify equipment, starting first with vehicles for underground mining, because they have zero emissions.
CHICAGO â Lithium batteries exploded loudly overnight inside a burning former paper mill in northern Illinois that officials had believed was long abandoned, and fire officials have decided to let the blaze burn out because they fear trying to extinguish it could trigger more explosions.
The fire that started in Morris on Tuesday prompted city officials to order the evacuation of 3,000-4,000 people in some 950 nearby homes, a school, church and small businesses.
On Wednesday, as thick, black smoke continued to billow from the building, Police Chief Alicia Steffes said the evacuation order would remain in place until at least 9 p.m. and âmight be extended.â
Police are stationed throughout the area to prevent people from entering, although anyone who can prove they live there may return to retrieve essential medicine, she said.
Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said thus far air quality tests were âcoming back favorable," but he cautioned that changing weather conditions and other factors could cause the air quality to deteriorate.
Da mayor commented. LOL

Mayor Chris Brown urged anyone experiencing respiratory problems to contact their physicians.
Work done by the Natural History Museum in London, shows that electrifying half of the U.S. motor vehicle fleet would require in rough terms:
- 9 times the worldâs current cobalt production
- 4 times global neodymium output
- 3 times global lithium production
- 2 times world copper production
The advent of automobiles in the early 20th century required many more times the raw materials than the change to EVs requires today. How much more oil needed to be extracted to put Americans in motorized carriages? Probably about a million times more than was being pumped at the time.
Much higher multiples of raw materials were required to build cities and industry from the 19th century to now. Some cities have grown 10 or even 100 times in size.
What do you think were the multiples of new raw materials required to build computers, smartphones, cars, airplanes, houses, buildings, air conditioning, heating systems, roads, and the electric grid?
Declaring that something will need resources is meaningless without context. However, the figures you cite are orders of magnitude less than most major innovations.
You are correct, there needs to be context. And the context is that none of those major innovations you mention came with an immediate mass-market demand to support. EVs are entering a massive existing market, and with a forced conversion creates an immediate demand that none of those other innovations couldâve satisfied either. The marketing slogan is âEveryone should convert, while we cross our fingers and blindly hope that the necessary innovations can keep up!â
My point is that electric vehicles are not âzero emissionsâ that they are sold as. They will require large increases in mining of toxic materials such as those mentioned.
And this is compared with gas powered cars. The dirty secret is that electric cars are much heavier than gas powered cars and therefore require extracting more materials from the environment. This damages the environment and also requires much more energy for the fossil fuel powered mining vehicles.
Another point: the materials mentioned, come mostly from our avowed enemy, the red Chinese
Good thing oil doesnât come from iran and russia, lol
Under President Trump, the USA was the largest producer of oil in the world and a net exporter of oil and natural gas. Other large producers are USA allies like Canada.
Bidenâs handlers are trying to change that of course by crippling USA production and providing funding for the Iranians, dropping sanctions on the Russians and other anti-American policies.
well I guess that all there is left is for me to shut up. LOL
Your posts consist of a series of assertions with no references whatsoever. Now that is not an intelligent discussion. Itâs basically just shouting on your part.
either that or naked link so no one knows what the point youâre trying to make.
