The 2020 USA POTUS election politics, the civil war, and the world war (Part 1)

For being Trump. Him merely existing seems to be proof of guilt in some minds.

On the “mess up the SOTU” thing (SOTU means State of the Union):

It appears not to be working. Reminds me of, from football, “icing the kicker” which is equally BS. Why assert this?

Have learned Leader McConnell cleared everything with Trump before agreeing to the plan. The Democrats apparently thought Trump would be more troubled than actually is the case. And in fact, Trump apparently is angling for a “double win”. To wit:

First he will kill the SOTU. Next day it now appears he might be able to celebrate a BIPARTISAN acquittal!! How so? Without the spotlight and pressure of the SOTU on their shoulders, it is possible two or more Democrat Senators could break ranks and vote to acquit. Specifically, they are:

Manchin of WV

Jones of AL

and possibly even

Sinema of AZ

Of course acquittal has been a certainty from the outset. But that is not the issue I’m discussing here. What’s of interest is the precise makeup of the final vote, and whether or not it is bipartisan. And you must also consider there easily could be votes in the other direction, against Trump from Republicans, to convict. Specifically:

Romney the RINO

Senator Susan Collins

For the record Senator Collins, unlike Romney, is a good person and an excellent Senator. But she lives in Maine, in New England, and she faces reelection this fall. There is no less representative region of our country than New England. They are totally out of step. Consider:

In 2016 Trump won the electoral college, all across America, by a wide margin. Do you know how many electoral votes he garnered throughout New England’s six states? The answer is one single electoral vote!!! What could be more out of step than that!

So Senator Collins has her hands full running in Maine and anything she does is good with me. I just hope she wins her election.

Anyway, bottom line, I will be transfixed watching the precise makeup of that vote next Wednesday to acquit . . . and so I’m sure will Trump . . . . . . .

if there is a vote:

Do not discount possibility of the New York Times or the WaPo disgorging more “news” in an effort to derail the anticipated Wednesday vote by providing Schumer with additional unsourced allegations. As one who lived through the entirety of the cold war, from prior to the outset in the mid 40’s all the way through to the end, I can tell you Pravda and Izvestia could take lessons from those two purveyors of propaganda.

So keep a weather eye. Anything still can happen.

Can someone explain this article for me?

Marco Rubio’s mind-blowing explanation of his impeachment vote

How can you possibly spin “Even if everything is proven true, it isnt going to change my vote. So trying to prove or disprove it is in itself a waste of time” into “he agrees Trump is guilty but doesnt want to piss anyone off.”?

This isnt an opinion piece by some random hack, it’s labeled as “analysis” by a CNN editor. It’s no wonder that there’s such a perception of media bias - it’s either that, or the author has absolutely no reading comprehension skills whatsoever.

My only reaction to Rubio’s statement is, how much did medium.com pay him to use their platform?

. . . and there is your explanation.

Well, yeah. I try not to enter the fray when it comes to claims that the media has an agenda beyond reporting the news. But articles like this make it really hard to ignore.

I can go along with this.

It really bothers me that with most events that are really meaningful, we see her name listed as “a problem” for the R. I don’t understand Maine elections. Maybe Collins should just sign in as a D & both parties might be happy.

Maine was years ago solidly and reliably Republican, even Conservative. Today southern Maine is largely gone. There does continue to be a pocket of traditional Republican Mainers up hard alongside the Canadian border, a largely rural region. These patriots remain more like the rest of America. They are responsible for the single electoral vote Trump won throughout all of New England (unlike most states Maine allots its electoral votes by Congressional district).

Senator Collins has a really tough race ahead of her. I was listening to her votes last evening on the individual proposals put forth by Schumer. She voted with the Democrats at least twice . . . so did Romney.

Except Romney, unlike Senator Collins, is not up for reelection and does not represent a state, Utah, which is full of Democrats. But of Romney I will offer this analysis:

You can take the boy out of Massachusetts but you cannot take Massachusetts out of the boy.

And of course Romney is also jealous as hell of Trump. I hope next time the people of Utah realize their horrible error. And you can bet, if Trump wins in November, Romney will really be feeling the heat if he dares to seek reelection in 2024. Turnabout, after all, is fair play!

Or, you can Pierre out of France, but you can’t take France out of Pierre.

Plan to be watching tomorrow when Mitt Romney votes. Romney holds the key as to whether or not the vote to remove Trump will be bipartisan. He can twist the knife he already has thrust into Trump by voting to remove him.

Romney knows, heck everyone knows, that Trump will be acquitted. But Romney’s vote to convict and remove would destroy Trump’s ability to declare the entire impeachment partisan. Romney, a desperately jealous RINO dripping with conceit, clearly detests Trump almost as much as did John McCain. Will he twist that knife? He has the power. Will he viciously use it and give Democrats a badly needed victory? Stay tuned.

State of the Union text

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-state-union-address-3/

watching the audience was definitely an interesting part of it, so you could see if the various congressional reps were applauding together or just one party. For example, when he was recounting all the job and wage gains, the democrat side was sitting there looking dour… probably since they were thinking of all those voters who might not need their “help” anymore.

Are you gonna pretend that Republicans clapped every time during Obama SOTUs? Come on now.

Also the link you posted does not appear to be a transcript of what he actually said.

At a time when the Democrats are reeling from error after error, Mitt Romney has just announced he will do all in his power to rescue and restore them at the expense of Trump and the Republicans:

Romney will vote this afternoon to remove President Trump from office.

I actually voted for that RINO scoundrel back in 2012. Now realize that was one of the most stupid and ill-advised votes I ever in my life have cast. Romney deserves to be keelhauled. What an SOB!!

Lol. You’re upset for someone doing what they’re supposed to. Voting based on facts and their own impartial judgment (flawed or not), as the oath requires, rather than partisan politics.

The absurdities are the several statements to the effect of: “It’s impeachable and proved. But impeachment shouldn’t be partisan, that’s more divisive and damaging to the country. SOOOOOO I’m making it partisan by voting against, because I care more about being re- elected [and also don’t want KKK to make death threats to my family.]”

Everyone should be able to agree the real loser in this process. Nixon was clearly cheated out of the presidency. He’d never have been removed today if he had completely spineless senators from his party controlling the Senate with 51 seats. He could have just publicly threatened witnesses not to testify and blocked any documents.

It is perfectly OK to vote for removal. Proof: Forty some odd Democrats are about to vote that way, quite possibly all of them.

And it is perfectly OK, too, for Romney to vote for removal.

What is not OK is for Romney the RINO to vote for removal and then try to represent himself as a Republican.

Romney is a Massachusetts Democrat who managed to convince Utah Republicans he is one of them. A lot of this was on account of his sharing religious beliefs with those same Utah Republicans.

I have far more respect for Democrats who look you in the eye and state their party affiliation honestly. There is nothing wrong with that. Romney is a turncoat and a liar. He is surely no Republican and he should not be accorded the respect Republicans deserve. Romney is a Democrat.

And BTW, Romney also announced he will not support or vote for President Trump in November. Republicans overwhelmingly support POTUS. Romney may vote however he wishes in November. But he has no place in the Republican party. Period

Although not accepting your premise, it does remind of an impeachment ~22 years ago.

There is a silver lining:

Alabama Democrat Senator Jones has announced he will vote to convict. That should be the end of Jones. He was in trouble even prior to this announcement.

Joe Manchin? I dunno. At this hour he has not pre-announced. Could Senator Manchin survive a vote to convict? Possibly. He is very popular in WV, a former governor there.

This vote is REALLY gonna be interesting this afternoon.

Not sure how you’d find that surprising, there’s no room for it. It would be unconscionable to vote for someone who was impeached and should have been removed from office*(according to Romney’s judgement).

An irony is Romney’s GOP rule change pushes in 2012 significantly aided Trump in getting the nomination. Romney was a big part of a reality TV personality being elected.

I think Trump should be acquitted. But I’m also pretty sure that politcal parties arent supposed to make this decision, it is the decision of each individual senator. I’d accept the criticism of Romney if he was doing it solely as a big middle finger to Trump, with no consideration of he was guilty or not. But if he has determined the accusations are legit, he should vote guilty.

That is very high minded of you. And of course Romney was able without effort to separate out his feelings of jealousy and hurt owing to Trump’s having succeeded where he failed. And the fact Trump is, at times, a rather coarse putz also did not enter into the calculation.

No, I think Romney is just another “never Trumper”. Those people detest POTUS as much as do Democrats, if not more vehemently. Fifty-two Senators of (what is supposedly) Romney’s party arrived at a different determination. But Romney is right while the “whole world” is wrong?

I have no problem with Democrats having voted to remove Trump. And I have no problem, either, with Romney having voted to remove . . . . so long as he abandons the facade of calling himself a Republican.

I’ve seen this all before and it was, somewhat remarkably, in this century. There was this guy named Arlen Specter. Dead now, he was a Republican Senator a dozen and more years ago. Specter was a RINO, which means he was a Democrat. But he insisted on running for office, over and over, as a Republican. Finally, only shortly before he passed away, the Republicans called BS on his ruse. What did Specter do? He immediately, and very belatedly, announced a change of parties!! But at least he presented himself to the electorate honestly before he died.

I’m good if Romney wants to change parties, which is what he should do. I want Republicans who remain true to their party, just as did EVERY Democrat this afternoon . . to their credit.

OK, sure, had five or ten Senators on either side broken ranks that is a different matter entirely. Such as that would have signalled genuine doubt, on the merits, regarding the case. If more Republican Senators had joined Romney then it’s not just about personal animosity . . . instead it’s real defensible concern about what happened.

But Romney was isolated and alone. And he is known to detest Trump with a passion. That’s not principle. That is revenge.

Romney said he found the President’s actions impeachable on count 1 because Joe and Hunter Biden did nothing wrong. Based on this article, it looks like Romney’s vote is just CYA for Romney being crooked.

From the article:

It’s looking increasingly probable that Burisma, the subject of a series of corruption allegations in the past, has been smartly buying Western complacency by slapping a few famous names on its board.
