nobody seems to follow my advice. (no MSing till vaccine, but plenty of bank bonuses) Pre pandemic I did and am still doing the 3% Discover miles. For 1 year. 1)Cancel card after bonus. 2)apply for same card with family members…3) rinse repeat. Im on 2nd 3% miles card for me. Waited 9 months to apply for 2nd time. They only allow 2 Discover cards maximum per customer. But the miles card does not have the 5% rotating cats. I max out my other Discover 5% card each Q. This Q. is WM/Target. Bought 1k WM gift cards and 500 target gift card. Got the 75.00 bonus yesterday. We do online groceries (no produce/dairy/frozen) at WM.com Also some items on target.com are cheaper then WM. No need to tie up $$ in BOA. Im pissed at BOA anyway.
Last year (have 3 BOA Cash rewards and picked online shopping cat.) When I bought VGC from GCM I got the 3% up to max from cash rewards. Did same thing last Q and bought from Vanilla Gift. No rewards. Did not count as online shopping. Just got 1% instead of 3%. Nobody speaks Eng there so massive waste for me to complain. Sock drawer cards now. Even drugstore cat sucks because my 3 OBC cards give 5% in that cat. BOA sucks…BUT they do allow lots of MO to be deposited to my checking acct via ATM. So no complaints on that end. With Disc Miles rec’d 3200 first year, son’s card netted 2800 and this is after VGC fees from grocery stores.
And ira accts are in Ally CD that pay 2.23 % thru 4/1/21. Not moving them to BOA/Merrill. Im 72 y/o but a healthy 72 and retired from NYPD as you know. Well have to get ready to watch my only TV “news” show now. Tucker Carlson and I love that NYPost front page story yesterday and today on Joe and Hunter. As usual, media does not run with it.
I also cancelled my Alliant CC due to fee. But they and WF are great for DD for bank bonuses!!
That’s not true, it’s good advice. I was just explaining the preferred rewards to Argyll. I do not have it. I’m actually putting all of my “everything else” spend on a new CapOne Venture for the next 6-12 months for the $1K bonus, so I too will cancel or downgrade my Alliant CC before next AF.
Alliant has just reduced our savings interest rate to 0.55% APY.
When you consider the carnage everywhere else, things could be worse. If you doubt me, talk to zzz. He’ll put you right pronto!
Statement date this month is November 13th.
Next: December 14th.
Bill pay did not go out last night. I noticed it in time but it is odd. Does anyone know if this is due to Veteran’s day today? It was put in earlier in the day yesterday so it should not have been an issue with the cut-off time for the day.
Veteran’s Day is a Bank/Credit Union holiday…most were closed today…that’s probably the reason…
Thanks. It seems odd that it wasn’t sent. I could understand it might be sent but delayed on the other end. Not a big deal… Just confusing and I wonder if I need to be aware of this for other bank holidays.
Merry Christmas from Alliant!
Our savings interest rate has once again held at 0.55%.
Happy New Year from Alliant!
Our savings interest rate, at this early hour anyway, appears once again to be holding at 0.55% APY.
If anyone here has the Alliant Platinum Rewards card, it seems Alliant has changed the points to cash back rate, so the card is now effectively a 1.5% cash back card instead of the 2% it was previously. This is sad news, and quite disappointing.
Gosh, that is a really big deal! I have the 2.5% card. I wonder if they will be coming next after those of us with that card.
There is new leadership at Alliant after seventeen years under Mr. Mooney. The new guy, while qualified, was not previously a CU guy. He came from “for profit” banking circumstances.
Funny, too, because Weiss just upgraded Alliant. Anyway, one less 2% CC in the world is not a good thing from where I sit. And the sneaky way Alliant did it does not resonate for me either. Not at all.
This is my data point which, were it not for Alliant’s recent sleight of hand with their 2% reward card, would be highly routine:
My Alliant Visa Signature closed last evening. I collected the full $250 they owed me, based on $10,000 of spend, thanks mostly to my side hustle.
Again, no news here except since Alliant did not announce or give fair notice of the reward reduction with their 2% card I was, and I remain, watchful for unannounced changes to my Alliant Visa Signature 2.5% card’s reward.
So far so good.
Meanwhile, I can confirm the sad news on the former 2% card. My statement closed, I have 5,994 points available, which previously would have been $59.94. This time, I can’t redeem, because I haven’t hit the $50 minimum.
The Platinum Rewards card is advertised as 2 points per dollar. I don’t know if T&C mentioned the value of the points, but it did mention something like “terms can change at any time without notice.”
The Visa Signature card is and has always been advertised as a “2.5% cash back” card. They could certainly change it to become a 1.789% cash back at any point, but they can not change the value of the cash back you’ve earned under the current terms. Plus the Alliant Rewards site tracks rewards as cash, not as points, so there’s no rush to redeem them.

Sorry. There is a small print provision I did not see at first:
To qualify for this deal you must be a new Alliant member. At least that is what it says . . . . . in the fine print.
Just for my curiosity, I called. No go!
But, I’ve mentioned here that I have a separate acct for spouse. Having more than one acct helps if you want to transfer more than $25k at a time. If possible open another account.
My new dog hasn’t yet gotten her Taxpayer ID, so we’re in a holding pattern for the new account.
ETA: I don’t want to risk running afoul of regulations by using my previous dog’s number.
So, I’m still looking for that new pup. First time in my life without a mutt, most times we have 1 or 2. Have one little kitty alone now, but getting much more attention than usual
It’s 2/1 7.30am ET. It looks like Alliant is holding at 0.55% APY again.
