Alliant Credit Union

Great news. I wish they would raise the checking APR, too. A few years ago, their main claim to fame was high interest checking but perhaps since savings accounts have unlimited withdrawals they aren’t bothering with this.

Guess not. You answered in the affirmative, which means at some point you had to examine all the code, and occasionally you examine the updates.

No guessing about it.

Wow! You are spending $10,000 a month?

Seriously? Didn’t expect that from a high roller.

Yes, every month. That is the way, at Alliant, to garner $250/month in rewards. It is also necessary to maintain at least a $1000 balance in Alliant checking . . . . . or at least that is how I do it.

Alliant is very good about paying up every month. I have no complaints, at least not so far. To date they have kept their end of the bargain.

And soon it will become easier for others to qualify. That is a good thing, I think.

Noted in passing:

I do my best to truncate my Alliant Visa Signature spending, each month, at $10,000. I come as close as I’m able. This is because it is wasteful of spending to go over that $10,000 mark since the overage earns only a 1.5% reward. I’m not doing 1.5% reward spending anywhere now. Do my best to maintain a 2% reward floor across the board, ex Citizens Bank at 1.8% which I tolerate.

[Shinobi Thanks for the info!!! just opened the Alliant high int. checking (via an email invite) with the 100 bonus by 3/1. I have a savings acct for 6 years and I use it as a hub for DD to other banks. (for bonuses). Never had more than 5k in it as I rate chase now (UFB/Bask/MyBanking Direct etc)So I see you needed 1k in acct for the 2.5% interest. Would Alliant do a hard pull if I apply for the card? I had the 3% card about 3 years ago and canceled it when they changed all the rules.
I have been using each year Disc Miles at 3%. Good for 1 year only and am working on 3rd family member’s card. Plus the Santander bank 3% up to 20k in the first year. Probably worth a hard pull for Alliant. What is your take? Especially if the 2.5 last over 1 year BTW, do you MS or use it for opening bank accts at banks allowing CC funding? Curious. I’m still MSing on 3 OBC cards plus Chase Freedom Flex for 3% at drug stores. getting a bit harder to liquidate but doable, still.

Alliant always does a hard pull in my experience, but that experience is a few years old now.

Someone may have a more recent data point for you or a reference.

He’s not “spending” it, he’s buying short-term CDs from banks that let him fund with the CC. He mentioned it here many times.

thanks! Still mulling it over. I know Disc Miles and Santander do pay out when I spend 5k at Vanillagift .com. Codes as “gift card purchases”. Not sure if Alliant would pay out on these purchases. Hmm

oh! Probably spent 25k on Disc Miles over 1 year for the 3% at vanillagift. Not a peep from them. just have to wait 12 months for the payout. Old adage in this biz of MS and bank bonues. “You must have enough funds to float all these purchases, or else get out of the biz”

methods of liquidating can dry up quickly. So far lucky with grocery store MO. WMart is too far for me where I live but could do it if I need to.

I’m surprised he’s successful at continuing to find them.

Why do yo uhave to wait 12 months? My Discover Miles payouts are within 60 days. The bonus payout occurs at ~12 months, but that’s well after the initial miles … or am I missing another level of bonus?

I know but I like to save it all up for a big payout at the end!! I was brought up poor but now I have this psychological thing. My OBC and BCP and Chase Freedom 5% I take immediately. For some reason, I just love that lump sum, with all my vanillagift.com and big insurance bills, town taxes etc. For the past 3 years, the Disc miles has earned me close to 4k each card. Thanks

If you earn 4k/yr and you earn it evenly throughout the year, then your annual average reward balance is 2k, which means that with a 2% savings account you could have earned another $40/yr. You’re paying the opportunity cost by waiting to take a lump sum.

Have I fixed your “psychological thing” yet?

It’s only $20 - half the amount is paid as a bonus at the end of the 12 months, so the rewards balance only averages $1k for the year - but the point remains.

You maths guys … I’m jealous.

So a year and a half after “kicking me out”, Alliant finally got around to closing my share savings account and sent a check for my $5 balance.
