Capital One buying Discover

Same here. Makes me wonder what happens to your credit history length if an account gets converted to a different issuer. That almost happened to me earlier this year when a Barclays AA card was scheduled to be converted to a Citi AA card (I closed the account to not have it interfere with my churning of SUBs).

Account retains the full history. In a full bank acquisition, the issuer just gets renamed. In an inter-bank portfolio transfer, the old account may show up as closed in addition to a new account showing up with the complete history. This is what happened to Amex->Citi Costco (well, almost, my Citi account somehow showed as being opened 1 year later than the Amex and I don’t think it had anything to do with amex’s old practice of backdating all account opening dates) and what I’ve seen with my mortgages. I don’t know what happened with Barclays->Citi AA as I also closed my account beforehand.

The reddit post used as the source mentioned that their kids custodial accounts were also closed.

I have 2 Discover cards. One has been converted but not the other. This means there are two web sites to be addressed. They could have easily converted both at the same time.

Wonder if I could apply for a third Discover it card to take advantage of the match after a year.

I kinda wonder if they’re doing it in batches after the 12-month matching promo has been completed, to avoid having to calculate that promo across multiple platforms?

Got an email this week about the Money Market account changes effective 10/8. I thought they’d turn it into a checking account, but the changes are consistent with a savings account. Another one bites the dust.
