Does the coronavirus merit investment, or personal, concern or consideration?

There were already some top universities with quality remote programs for cheap. (Such as OMSCS at Georgia tech for ~$6k total for the Master’s program).

Why pay $100k to go to a third tier school when you can pay $6k to go to a top tier school? (As the better schools get better at shifting teaching methods)

Why do that ever?

Try to find a university under $25k/yr… Even without including room &board if not local. (Sure, not directly translatable to the OMSCS example, referring to undergrad with the $100k)

Well you said 3rd tier. I was thinking tha tthe 3rd tier of colleges was pretty far down like lower level state schools like the ones with Southwest or Northeast in their names that nobody outside of the state has heard of and half the people in teh state haven’t.

But then I went to find the definition of 3rd tier and I’m not sure what that definition is or if theres a real standard for ‘tiers’.

Theres good schools in teh $25k range.

U Texas is about $28k / yr
U Washington is also about $28k/yr

Yeah 28k ain’t 25k but more or less. Granted many places don’t have good schools that cheap. Some don’t have good schools at all and their mediocre ones aren’t cheap. This does vary a lot state to state.

Here in Oregon our schools are merely average but theyr’e not too expensive.

In just a single elementary school building, that’s enough funding for 3+ teachers. It’s easy to rationalize away, but it is a really significant cost.

Yeah I made up the term.

Community colleges and state schools are generally lowest cost (for locals).

Random private universities and colleges are pretty expensive. Guess I’m referring to “not widely known” places as third tier.

We’re spending trillions. A few billion is not even a rounding error.

Yeah ok, but I don’t see why people would pay that kind of money for any kind of mediocre college to begin with.

back to your point though, I think I agree with you. What we’re seeing now might further the acceptance and adoption of online universities and push down costs at traditional in person class universities.

If you can go to Oregon State or Utah State or any similar or better university online for like $10k a year then why pay $25k to go to Southeast Nowhere State ?

Especially given the opportunity costs of getting rid of your kids so you can go to work and earn some (taxable) income.

“We” may be spending trillions in aggrigate. But individual school districts are not, and are still hamstrung by really tight budgets. And everyone is already knee deep in making plans based on what they have available right now.

Obviously, the solution is for the Feds to pay for such testing for any school that wants to use it. But how many will let such an offer upend what they’ve been working on? And more importantly, that seems way too simple for anything that has come out of Washington lately - the costs will be reimbursed at some future date, based on an unspecified formula using the school district’s median income demographics to calculate the percentage that’s actually reimbursable, or some stupid crap like that.

Well yeah. Unfortunately the administration is sitting on earlier approved/allocated covid-19 testing/tracing funds and is opposed to more. …because “tests create cases”

This was a very good and timely interview with Fauci by several virologists to get his take on lots of the current questions about pandemic - vaccines, schools, lasting immunity, etc, 35min and half that at 2x speed

The same guys do a regular 1-2 hour long highly scientific discussion about virology topics, many but not all covid, if you want to see those as well.

Article on recent promising vaccine candidates and how many look like they may require two shots, typically a month apart, to generate the level of immunity desired. Not a huge deal, but logistically annoying.

Monday marked the first day of Walmart’s nationwide mask decree: no mask, no service. How would that go over in Georgia, a state whose governor has not only shot down mask mandates but filed a lawsuit against them?

This article completely misses the point. Walmart isnt somehow “defying” the Georgia governor, this result is exactly how the governor of Georgia is saying it is suppose to work.

No matter how hard some try to make it into a referendum on mask wearing, it’s only a referendum on governmental authority. Despite apparently trying, this author couldnt find the mass opposition to Walmart’s policy he was clearly expecting. Because Walmart is exercising their right to make rules on their property, not enforcing a mandate being imposed on them - and most people respect that, since it’s no different than setting the rules in your own home. The Governor’s argument isnt anti-mask, it that the government cant mandate it regardless of how beneficial anyone thinks it is.

So much of this is controversy is also a natural response to, essentially, being treated like a child. The lecturing, the “I know what’s best for you”, the “this is why I’m right/you’re wrong” patronizing. But when Walmart simply says, “These are our rules to shop here”, it’s no longer about the individual, it’s about the business and the business’s rights. No lecturing, no patronizing, just a rule. When you complain about “No shoes, no shirt, no service”, the most response you’ll get is a quick “it’s a sanitary thing”. Not a dissertation on how body sweat can contaminate the fresh produce. That’s how it’s supposed to be.

Subject: ATTN: Returning Passengers from the Philippines via Asiana Airlines & Korean Air

To all returning passengers from the Philippines (via Asiana Airlines and Korean Air)

There has been a recent increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases from those who have been entering Korea via plane from the Philippines.

Because of this, the South Korean Government has decided to require all foreign travelers (transfer passengers included) arriving in South Korea from July 20 onwards to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result issued within 48 hours before flight departure time. The negative COVID-19 PCR test result must be shown at the time of check-in at the airport and upon the time of arrival at the quarantine authority in Korea.

Only negative COVID-19 PCR test results issued by one of the hospitals designated by the embassy will be accepted.

All these previously mentioned measures are not related to visa issuance, so even though you have already received a visa, you have to take an additional COVID-19 PCR Test before your flight.

Lastly, new visa applications at the Korean Embassy in the Philippines and processing of visa applications that have already been received prior to this announcement will not be accepted until further notice. Exceptions to this include visas for diplomatic purposes, officials, seamen, and the spouse and child of a Korean national.

The wisdom of those 50% capacity boats may be debatable. But can we all agree that “6” is pretty asinine?
