Does the coronavirus merit investment, or personal, concern or consideration?

Although you may think this redundant, I disagree, at least in name.

This has also been a resounding success for Democrats. The economy was steamrolling all Democrat precepts, concepts, creations, and hopes. Within 3 months of the virus from China hitting, we were knocked back to the Obama economy, and 3 months later, to the FDR economy.

Thus, the Wuhan Flu gave SS candidate Biden, at least theoretically, a snowball’s chance in Hades to be propped up by big media and big socialism.

In alternate perspective, it’s been a loss for all of us.

We had almost 4 years of extremely good luck with no major challenges for trump’s incompetence to play out after he entered office in an expanding economy, and none blew up in our faces with large loss of life. Few economic policies blew up other than his assault on some domestic industries (like steel tariffs to disadvantage domestic auto manufacturers relative to foreign imports that paid no such tariffs. ).

Then we got a completely predictable pandemic (that had already been recognized as one of the most likely and greatest threats… For which the USA had been the best prepared in the world. ).

Virus likely originated in China, but the failed response and relative underperformamce versus the other rich western countries is all Trump Virus, his corruption and incompetence has infected our nation’s respected institutions’ abilities to perform their functions effectively.

None of these are even finished enrolling people in the phase III trials. Moderna who started one of the earliest, is still enrolling thousands of people. They could realistically be done enrolling people by the end of September. It’s mind-boggling to think they’d be done in a month for a phase III trial + FDA review in order to deliver an approved vaccine by Nov 1st.

For reference, the usual duration of a phase III trial for a vaccine is 1-4 years. IMO fast-tracking phase III to 2 months and rubber stamping the LBA by the FDA without actual review is the only way a vaccine can be ready on Nov 1st. At that point, might as well call it expanded phase I. And at the Nov 1st time-frame, you’d have to accept that they have no clue whatsoever about long-term side effects of what they’re injecting you.

Not saying it may not be worth it for some high-risk populations but they should be upfront about their level of confidence in the vaccine’s safety. I wonder if they’ll have a waiver for you to sign when administering the vaccine but I think that’d be smart for big companies like Pfizer to protect themselves from future liability.

there’s even one for flu vaccinations. The waiver is for the manufacturer and the clinic.
But we do have a sort of federal “insurance” for this. National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program | HRSA

They’re supposed to approve payments without needing solid proof the cause is the vaccine (which is pretty much impossible to do in any single case).

Well it’s certainly the case that you will have no idea of long term side effects until years from now, and that’s true of both the virus and the vaccine. From a practical perspective, the question isn’t absolute safety, but rather whether the possible long term risks of a vaccine are more or less than the short and long term risks of covid (assuming a phase 3 success / approval rules out any meaningfully likely short term effects). For many older or sicker people, I think that is an easy question and the vaccine makes sense, for younger healthier people its less clear perhaps. It may depend a little on the vaccine mechanism used as well, since some of these mRNA based approaches are different than attenuated virus or adenovirus vectors or whatever else.

I thought those were for mostly allergic reactions and the like to the vaccine. Good to know it’d cover any harm including if you developed long-term side effects. Although I wonder if the payments would be higher through a class-action suit in case of large-scale scenario with faulty vaccine.

I agree and that’s part of my concerns that the mRNA vaccines are not gonna be typical in terms of expected side effects. We may have little indication of long-term side effects for a while. As someone with none of the known comorbidities, that’s something that’s gonna weight on the decision, especially given the rush treatment that the vaccines look like they’re gonna get in terms of trial and reviews.

I thought this was a well-sourced writeup for why the second wave of cases seems to not be leading to a second wave in hospitalizations or deaths even though it’s been long enough now since things opened up more in the US and Europe.

Short version - more people may have gotten it that we thought, which would make it harder for the virus to spread as herd immunity levels are incrementally approached.

Somewhat longer version - many of most at risk of death and/or infection already got it and/or died, some fraction of people seem to have some level of pre-existing T-cell immunity from other cold virus exposures, antibody testing surveys tend to underestimate counting those who had it. All these lead to a smaller and/or less at-risk uninfected population now than six months ago.

You mean basically what some of us have considered to be pretty obvious all along?

But but but the science said that wasnt true!

Steve Bannon Is Behind Bogus Study That China Created COVID

Trump’s HHS spokesman is considering taking medical leave after spreading wild conspiracies about armed left-wing ‘hit squads’ attacking Trump’s inauguration

Is this really on script? Most of the people swayed by this kind of ̶j̶o̶u̶r̶n̶a̶ stuff are too high/asleep/unaware to know anything about Steve Bannon. I suspect someone dropped the ball and I will be happy to pick it up for them and correct the headline to fit their mantra:

Trump’s behind created bogus study of Chinese Virus, or something similar. They all make about the same amount of sense.

Your group seems to be having an off day. Again, I’ll correct the headline so that knuckleheads will be able to puff themselves up appropriately:

Trump’s HHS spokesman is considering taking medical leave after spreading Chinese Flu

For blockheads like me, who fit part of that description, the question is not very easy at all. I’ve known 5 people who were visited by Wuhan. Three of them were elderly or not in the best of health. All five recovered within 3 days and experienced mild flu-like symptoms.

Yes, I know it’s anecdotal, but it’s hard to fly in the face of what you know. After looking at all of the “sky is falling” reports and all of the do as I say and not as I do actions of maskers, my thoughts are to not get the vaccine. Actually, my preference is to not take anything developed in the past 8 - 10 years. Thus, I may trust the vaccine marketed today in 2028, if it hasn’t been proved to be a fraud (both threat and cure).

““If you’re asking me when is it going to be generally available to the American public so we can begin to take advantage of vaccine to get back to our regular life, I think we’re probably looking at third … late second quarter, third quarter 2021,” he told the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.”

Also redfield:

South Park is returning with a Covid19-focused 1 hour special, airing in a couple weeks.

I’m looking forward to finally getting some straight information on this whole fiasco.

Happy days!

I hope we hear the best news going. We are ready… Even if they tell us early or middle of 2021 the vaccine will be out & about.

By that time, we’ll have our great President Trump in the White House. We’ll all be back out on the streets. (I hope)
