Investment impact of Russia Ukraine crisis

And not totally unexpected by someone using the handle “bigserge”. From the Ukrainian “Ace”, to bigserge, both sides have been slinging lots of propaganda, and I use that term loosely.

We haven’t heard that much from Russia, primarily because you have to look for it to find it. The little bit of Russian propaganda reported generally seems to be part of another story that is critical of the invading Cossacks (not the Ukrainian Cossacks, just the Russian Cossacks).

For those who perceive the above as complimentary to the Russians, it is not. They have been outwitted at every turn by the Ukrainians who are obviously much more adept with social median than the Commie Russkies.

It is really hard to be an occupying force, even for a highly competent force (think Iraq, etc for US)

Throw in Russian incompetence and Ukrainian agility= Long term stalemate.

Wonder what happens to this guy below, also did the old guy go flying out of a window?

I don’t follow those headlines closely, but there was a flurry about how the Ukrainians were driving the Russians out. Or, was that more propaganda?

Germany taking the socialist approach

GERMAN EXPERTS PROPOSE SUBSIDIZING 70%-80% OF GAS CONSUMPTION

Meanwhile France is nationalizing their nuclear power company.

Russia and Ukraine take terms calling each other terrorists regarding the recent truck bombing of the Crimean bridge and subsequent retaliatory Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian communications and energy targets.

yeah but it’s a David & Goliath type situation with Goliath not dying though.

Check the maps. It isn’t propaganda that Ukraine is making significant gains in retaking their territory, but they have a lot of ground to cover.

While I trust that you believe it isn’t propaganda, I won’t bother with the maps.

I bothered to read the stories following the headlines when the “Ukranian Ace” was slaughtering the Russian air force. Those headlines were propaganda, but there was a lot of supposed evidence, including “maps” of where he/she/it supposedly used their MiG-29 to shoot down a variety of Russian SU’s.

I also bothered to read the stories under the headlines about mass rapes supposedly committed by Russian soldiers. These stories also included “maps” of where the supposed rapes occurred. There were “eyewitnesses” and other “evidence” reported. That was also propaganda.

The above are only two examples of Ukrainian propaganda. I’m not complaining about it, nor am I complaining about Russian propaganda, of which, I’m sure there is much. That is the nature of war, especially when you’re the weakling in the fight. You want help from neighbors, friends, and especially the sole world superpower. The more sympathy you engender (not the changing kind), the more money and weapons will be given to you.

Up to you, I suppose, whether you want to think these are just more propaganda.

They are only making vetted updates to the map, so lag what is shown on other sources like:

(that map geo-locates tweets so has more activity that military territorial control)

while I appreciate the links, I previously stated that there were maps of the supposed Ace actions and the supposed rapes. I’m sure there are accurate and inaccurate maps of the current lines of entanglement, Sadly, I don’t have the time or horsepower to suss out which are propaganda for either side, and which are accurate.

Back to topic. Time to look at defense ETFs or macro forces too strong?

I’m sure some are better than others. (i.e. pure-play defense vs companies with half their business in commercial aerospace that can get hammered by consumer recessions)

Yeah Boeing comes to mind. One of my MBA classmates shared that the defense side (she was on) carries the commercial one. Not sure how much truth to that?

This is why I like sector ETF, yes returns are moderate, but diversified. Not sure if strategy is still good though

Defense carrying commercial with Boeing is what Airbus always complained about while Boeing griped about EU subsidies for Airbus, so there is probably some truth to it.

I was thinking specifically about Raytheon in this case, since they have so much missile hardware getting used in Ukraine right now. But may stand to get hurt on the commercial front during a slowdown.

Boeing stock is down 36% and Raytheon down 10% year-to-date.

But the Oil/energy VDE etf is up 40% YTD.

Which is pretty dam good compared to almost everything else, right?

vs Lockheed (the pure-play defense stock) up 10% YTD, despite being down 4% today.

More on gas pipelines (from last week, getting caught up):

  • RUSSIA’S PUTIN: GLOBAL ECONOMY, ENERGY MARKETS ARE IN AN ACUTE CRISIS THAT’S DUE TO RISING PRICES
  • RUSSIA’S PUTIN: THAT’S ABOUT DEPRIVING PEOPLE OF CHEAP ENERGY
  • RUSSIA’S PUTIN: SABOTAGE AT NORD STREAM IS AN ACT OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM
  • RUSSIA’S PUTIN: UNITED STATES NOW IS ABLE TO SUPPLY ENERGY AT HIGHER PRICES
  • RUSSIA’S PUTIN: UNITED STATES MAY FORCE EUROPE TO BUY ITS LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS
  • RUSSIA’S PUTIN: IT’S POSSIBLE TO REPAIR NORD STREAMS
  • RUSSIA’S PUTIN: ONE LINE OF NORD STREAM 2 IS SAFE

All the motherfucker has to do is take his people home and he can start selling gas again on the open market… it isn’t that hard.

(well, at least that would have been true earlier on – at this point, the level of atrocity has reached a point that there will probably be other demands to pay to repair all of the infrastructure they’ve trashed, at a minimum – but point stands, this situation is entirely of his making and it is either up to him to stop and leave, or someone near him to take him out of the picture)

Whose side are the Dutch on?

But the reality is that few of the drilling-induced tremors are ever large enough to notice without a sensitive seismometer. The vast majority are lower than magnitude 3. The United States Geological Service notes that a couple of rumblers of this sort have reached above 4.0, but that’s relatively rare and a magnitude 4 tremor is still not likely to do much damage beyond knocking a few glasses off the shelves.

Is that really a reason to shut down one of the richest natural gas reserves in all of Europe? Apparently, it is, at least in the eyes of the European Union. But what are they doing for energy if the Russian supplies are cut off and they refuse to drill for their own supplies? Never fear! They’ve already come up with an answer. They’ve gone back to burning coal.
