Because we’re in an era where personal accountability is completely out the window. Starting with politicians never admitting mistakes. When something pans out, it’s all their doing. When it doesn’t, they just inherited a terrible situation and couldn’t fix it or they use a horrible person fall guy/gal. Look at where we’re at on entitlement reform. Medicaid/Medicare are in the red big time with no solution in sight and nobody doing anything about it because it’s not going to be easy or popular. Same with social security.
People just mirror what they see every person of authority do. “I did the right thing, I wanted to be self-sufficient. It’s someone else’s fault that I cannot afford my payments when I failed.” You’ll never hear “I wanted to believe I wasn’t borrowing more than I could chew, that my career would take off and make it all affordable but I screwed up and now I’m in debt to my eyeballs through my own doing.”
It’s easier to complain about affordability like if it’s all someone else’s doing instead of questioning whether expectation/lifestyle is in line with your means.
