‘Like Armageddon’: Rotting food, dead animals and chaos at postal facilities amid cutbacks
"…inside a massive mail-sorting facility in South Los Angeles, workers fell so far behind processing packages that by early August, gnats and rodents were swarming around containers of rotted fruit and meat, and baby chicks were dead inside their boxes.
postal workers say significant damage has already been done, including the removal of mail-sorting machines, which may not be replaced.
Until this week, the postal service was implementing a sweeping plan to remove 671 mail-sorting machines, or about 10% of its total, from facilities across the U.S. — including 76 in California. Officials also slashed overtime pay and imposed a new policy that could delay outgoing mail.
The cuts have had a ripple effect in California, snarling the operation of one of the biggest mail-processing facilities in the country and delaying the delivery of prescriptions, rent payments and unemployment checks. Some people have complained of going days without receiving any mail at all.
At least five high-speed mail-sorting machines have been removed from a processing plant in Sacramento, said Omar Gonzalez, the Western regional coordinator for the American Postal Workers Union. Additionally, two of the machines have been removed in Santa Ana and six in San Diego, Gonzalez said.
The delays were particularly tragic for live animals, including baby chickens and crickets, that are transported through the U.S. Postal Service. Usually, mail handlers say, they can hear the birds peeping and rustling around in their boxes.
At the Santa Clarita processing and distribution center, two delivery bar code sorters were padlocked and gutted of their cameras and computers in July so that workers couldn’t plug them in and start using them again.

No President in history has campaigned against the First Amendment, and tried to dismantle the Post Office, the Census, and the voting system. Rermoving 10% of all mail-sorting machines in the country with a vote coming up?
Thousands of chicks arrive dead to farmers amid USPS turmoil
"At least 4,800 chicks shipped to Maine farmers through the U.S. Postal Service have arrived dead in recent weeks after rapid cuts hit the federal mail carrier’s operations, Rep. Chellie Pingree said.
Pauline Henderson, who owns Pine Tree Poultry in New Sharon, Maine, told the newspaper she was shocked last week when all of the 800 chicks sent to her from a hatchery in Pennsylvania were dead.
“Usually they arrive every three weeks like clockwork,” she said. “And out of 100 birds you may have one or two that die in shipping.”
Thousands of birds that moved through the Postal Service’s processing center in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, were also dead, impacting several farms in Maine and New Hampshire, Henderson said.
“It’s one more of the consequences of this disorganization, this sort of chaos they’ve created at the post office and nobody thought through when they were thinking of slowing down the mail,” Pingree said, adding that her office has received dozens of complaints from farmers and others trying to raise a small flock of chickens in the backyard.
Pingree said she isn’t sure if Perdue is aware of how the changes in the Postal Service are impacting smaller poultry farmers in the U.S.
“This is a system that’s always worked before and it’s worked very well until these changes started being made,” Pingree said.
The Postal Service is the only entity that ships live chicks and other small animals and has done so since 1918, according to the service’s website.
“Rural Americans, including agricultural producers, disproportionately rely on USPS for their livelihoods, and it is essential that they receive reliable service,” Pingree said."
You mistake statement of facts for “hatred and darkness.” Just because they stated that Trump’s behavior and policies are truly terrible doesn’t mean it was full of hatred. A lot of right-wingers project a lot, assuming other people are like them; because they’re angry and full of hatred they see any differing opinion as someone else’s anger and hatred.
All the darkness and hatred is on the side of Trump and his supporters. Trump is supported by all the racist organizations, Nazi, KKK, David Duke, Qanon, which have all endorsed Trump.
Awww
=>
Of course, Los Angeles. Why arent there such horror stories from the 90% of the country that wont self-sabotage themselves just to sell the “Trump is unbelievably terrible” ruse?
I do admire the commitment, though. I just wish it could be refocused into more productive endeavors.
Yet no mention of when these chicks did arrive, or how long they were in transit… No one claimed a loss for these alleged animals… And even if taken at face value, did they pony up for actual fast service that marked the package as a priority, or just slap a standard shipping label on it?
Besides, it seems like everyone has forgotten that mail has been lost and delayed since the creation of the Post Office. Just because it happens today when you have a timely scapegoat doesnt make it a new problem caused by today’s actions.
Who’s doing the projecting now?
Rings a bell.
Could that be the infamous USPS Bell Gardens facility? Over the years I have had shipments to CA arrive there and simply vanish. The tracking just goes dark.
Looked it up on the net back then. That sorting facility, for years, has reputedly been:
“The place USPS shipments go to die”
If you see “90201” . . . . . . . . . . start worrying!!
Bell Gardens is the Roach Motel of USPS mail sorting facilities:
Your shipments check in, but they don’t check out!!
Also, many people are finding checks they’ve mailed are getting to the creditor late and they have to pay late fees.
Interesting. I have not seen or felt any impact so far. But I live in one of the top-rated postal regions in the USA. Even our sectional center, which is several hours distant, is still not in one of the very large cities. And of course post office workers nearer to me are small town/rural no BS people who are extremely responsible and have old-fashioned values.
It cant be too many mailing checks, or else the Post Office wouldnt be in such dire financial straights.
Late arriving checks isnt a problem of USPS execution, it’s a problem with some people’s expectations. Kind of like the states that allow people to request an absentee ballot as late as 4 days prior to election day. It’s not the Post Office’s fault for the voter’s ballot not being returned in time to be counted.
They’re not really, their revenue was up YoY.
And as pointed out a million times they were very profitable before being saddled with the absurd pension prefunding scheme. Intended to do exactly what it has – make the USPS appear to be a money pit, so it could be broken up and sold at a discount to businesses owned by the fraudsters. This is not a “new” scheme.
People expected additional nonsense this year, even before covid. USPS could privatize as early as 2020 | Fortune
“I don’t know anything about it”
I dont know how profitable they’d be, but we’ve already agreed it’s a pretty stupid requirement.
Regardless, that’s a legislative requirement - from long before Trump ever entered the equation - they have to follow, no matter how absurd you may feel it is. Is this another case of expecting them to follow what you think the law should be, rather than follow the actual law?
(Whether they were profitable or not, they could still benefit from some modernization of equipment, etc. I was not claiming the post office was perfect)
No, not a case of whatever you’re asking is supposed to mean… Congress can legislate changes. That’s in the main discourse now. Dejoy says no legislation needed. Trump/licans say no changes needed. Other Congress members want to address the shortcomings through legislation.
If Trump is elected in November, we’re much more likely to see the destruction (“privatization”) of the post office. If Biden is elected, along with the Senate flipping, the USPS is much more likely to remain and be shored up in its current deficiencies. Obviously, there are many other issues dependent on the election, not just the post office.
God forbid someone thinks they can actually operate within their means, and not become another agency sucking on the taxpayer teet. As far as I know, the “legislation” is not to reform their pension requirements to something more reasonable, it’s just throwing additional money at them. And even then, only for a few months (to fulfill a particular political motivation). A temporary subsidy is not “shoring up”.
The USPS was much more federally integrated for the vast majority of it’s hustory. The MAGA opining for “the good old days” seems like the default MAGA position on the post office would be to revert things to how they used to be? Maybe even get rid of the aging postal trucks and replace with horses…
OTOH, wouldn’t the “progressive” position be to change it and make it better (not that the task would necessarily be successful), in ways such as it being self sufficient? And being independently run, which it was moreso before this admin strongarmed the board to bypass the mandated selection process and place a crony with competing financial interests into the postmaster general position?
Edit: Hustory is a word stable geniuses use now, just like plosma and fatilities… So I’m leaving the autocorrect typo.
-
Will we see a convention bump in polls in a week or two from the joint DNC/Republican convention that took place this week?
-
Will Trump manage to expand support beyond the extremist followers and the other remaining “Team Red” supporters through his Trumplican Reality TV production?
convention? -
Drinking game proposal: How many times will Trump say that Biden will “destroy the suburbs” or refer to
desperate“suburban housewives” during the convention?
Isnt that exactly what is being done? As opposed to your “progressive” temporary subsidies to fund a politically-driven initiative?
Continuing to run the post office into the ground and trying to dismantle it is not “making it better”. It’s throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
Yes, this is a somewhat subjective characterization.
The financial conflicts of interest (ownership holdings in competitors) of the current Postmaster General are simply fact, though. Sure, he could be a saint and not look after his personal financial interests. That doesn’t negate those conflicts of interest being present.
