Yes, much will be revealed tomorrow night. That is for certain.
I’m not at all sure Trump will blow Biden away, as many expect. Biden has much more debate experience on the national stage, and much more recent experience as well.
While Trump has learned much in the last few years, he is not a natural Conservative with ability to counter all the liberal BS arguments. Trump also is nowhere near being the politician Biden is. So Biden could do quite well if he is having a good night.
If you think back to 2012, President Obama clearly lost the first debate to Romney. Of course the liberal mainstream media covered for him and he did better in the next two debates (remember fat Candy, moderator and Obama’s liberal assistant?).
As usual, they’ve miscalculated, unless they have a “part II” ready to go. If they do, that will be when Comrade Joseph (plagiarism? Can you spell it for me?) Biden bails out of the debate or when the DNC BM script loses traction after the debate.
I still think he’s going to bail out. He doesn’t have too many other options.
This has been so nice, not having to combine responses to 15 messages into one message. Now back to hunting.
Almost forgot a present I wanted to leave. For Bender/Scripta/Argyll, this is probably something to read while eating free range, gluten-free, recycled popcorn. For everyone else, it is what the country would like if Comrade Joseph “I pledge allegiance to the United States of America, one nation, indivisible, under God, for real,”) Biden got elected. In other words, it’s sci-fi.
There is no question in my mind that if Biden does well tomorrow night he might opt out of the final two debates. Why, under those circumstances, would he offer Trump the opportunity to recoups?
If he shows up, he will not do well. The DNC BM will have their scripts ready, and they will fire everything for 18 - 24 hours, but it will fail.
Friends have suggested that he can just repeat the same insults to Trump for every question, but this is a losing gambit. He will look bad, or he will forget the insults, or he will wander off the stage.
I just wanted to post this because it has occurred to me more than once:
Everyone knows Nancy can shut down the Senate at any time by impeaching Trump once again. This is in the Constitution (I think). Of course such a draconian measure might impact Biden’s prospects in a negative manner, so Nancy must be cautious.
Here is what I do not know:
Can Nancy achieve the same outcome, while avoiding the downside for Biden, by impeaching Barr instead?
Once again, I simply do not know the answer to that. Can Nancy shut down the Senate by impeaching the AG and sending that House vote outcome to the Senate? It works for the POTUS for certain. But the AG? I dunno.
In any event, I would put nothing past the Democrats. They desperately do not want ACB on the Court. I believe they will pull out all stops in an effort to hold her down.
ETA
Pursuant to the above:
Democrats’ best shot is to delay the confirmation vote until after November third. Doing so offers them at least two shots at victory. To wit:
Biden might win
Control of the Senate might flip
In either event the Republicans would have a much tougher go confirming ACB during the lame duck . . . when they are dead ducks.
If the confirmation can happen before the election, things are different. But Nancy has the power to stop that happening.
This is false. The senate can dismiss the charges (sure, abdication of duty, whatever. Not relevant to their voters though).
Sure, they have a responsibility to impeach Barr if warranted. But they won’t. Because it won’t accomplish anything since at least half of the Senate will disregard their oaths of office.
This is fantasy.
They can and will slow things down as possible. But there simply is no power for a minority in the senate to block the confirmation.
It would be no different after the election…
As for the president saying he wants to specifically install a new Justice before any possible court cases from the election, and that he would have an advantage if done — clearly any ethical justice would now have to recuse themself if such a situation were to arise based on the president’s very public bluster directly politicizing the appointment. It would be very likely that every one of the currently sitting justices would have done so if they had been put in this situation.
I simply disagree with you categorically. You are patently in error on every point.
There is one scenario I did not address:
Should there be uncertainty regarding the election’s outcome, as many today predict could exist for a number of days following November third, that interval of time might provide the needed opportunity to confirm ACB without undue political conflagration.
Uh, you do realize I hope that the “Nancy” to whom I made reference is the Speaker of the HOUSE.
So, since you say you disagree with me on every point…
you think the senate can’t dismiss impeachment charges without holding a full trial?
you think the house has no responsibility to impeach Barr if the impeachment is warranted? (I made no such claim that it is warranted or not)
you think a minority in the senate (the Democrats) can block a Supreme Court confirmation with there being no filibuster?
you think McConnell won’t be able to get a confirmation through if it’s during a lame duck period? What, he’ll just change his mind? Or do you think other republican senators will flip and vote against confirmation?
Trump has nosedived in the Rasmussen Daily Tracking Poll. His approval is all the way down to 46%, a level which presages a high level of uncertainty for a positive outcome on third of November.
Apparently Americans are displeased with his performance in these past few days. I am disheartened and hoping for the best.
Trump has stated publicly he wants the new Justice in specifically because that will give him an advantage. That’s the president claiming it… not me. It doesn’t matter if the Justice would or would not factor the president’s statements into any ruling. The president has specifically created a situation where it would appear improper and would damage the Court were the new Justice not to recuse on a related matter.
Maintaining the integrity of the Court is higher on a Justice’s priorities than avoiding a Twitter tirade.
No, shinobi followed up. Really did disagree on the points. And generally matched how I restated the opposing opinions.
I disagree and still maintain pigs would have to fly, hell would have to freeze over, etc. for the confirmation not to occur before the new president is installed. And that there is no “nomination fight” to be had. But. That’s, just, like, my opinion, man.
I could envision the confirmation happening after Nov 3, specifically if it’s thought this will distract from covid19 failures and can be used as a carrot for getting a higher turnout of faux Christians.
