Biden’s supporters were too busy rioting to participate in a poll.
Everyone is calling the rioters criminals… That’s not the same thing as calling all the protesters criminals.
Trump of course didn’t apologize but just claimed ignorance to his racist tweets from the day before:
Of course that was followed up by new tweets about vicious dogs being ready to attack any who broke the perimeter at the WH, and dogs being used on protesters also has history…
That’s a slam on Biden supporters. You are welcome to slam Biden, or his supporters, or Trump, or his supporters, here all day long. Political controversy is the subject of this thread.
While normally I would go along with anything attacking Biden or the loonies supporting him, I for some reason do not buy into them being rioters. The rioters likely do not vote at all. They just get their jollies from burning and destroying other people’s lives. They get off on the violence and destruction itself. Biden supporters are merely nitwits. The rioters are pure evil.
This is off topic but I’m gonna post this anyway because:
*I’m the OP
*There have already been posts relating to this
I was very surprised this morning as I watched Face the Nation. Earlier this week, listening to conservative radio, I heard mention that his murderer actually knew Mr. Floyd personally. But I heard no mention of this on mainstream media since, to where I thought it might be erroneous.
Nope. This morning the lawyer for Mr. Floyd’s family, during his interview with Margaret Brennan, confirmed the two men had worked together in the past!
Why important? Because the existing third degree murder charge is very light and insufficient, at least in my view. Given the murderer and Mr. Floyd were not strangers, it seems to me there is an opening for a first degree murder charge, or at least second degree murder!!
I also was happy to realize my conservative news source, Red Eye Radio, was on the mark after all. They most often are.
It was a joke…
Sorry. I missed the smiley face . . . no . . . wait . . .
You know, I’m pretty sure you could dig up a “history” for just about every word and phrase in the English language. If such things trigger your racist alarm, then blame those in history who used them in a racist way. Dont blame people today for not crossing them off their list of “acceptable” language.
Words matter. Especially words from the President of the US. Not exactly a new concept…
Fed doesn’t have much place in resolving this situation (despite what the president has been tweeting about being able to unilaterally weaponize the military against US civilians like the foreign “leaders” he idolizes like Kim and Xi… it’s currently a state and local matter unless they ask for federal help) at this point except through words. He has been failing to fulfill that required role of facilitating de-escalation.
(In my mind) I can just see Rottweilers inside the perimeter of the WH, ready to attack those rioters as they jump the fence. (joke)
Seriously I have a rottweiler & g shepard in my fenced acre yard. Very friendly & loving animals if we open the gate & let folks in. Yes, Otto & Mimi inside the perimeter of my country home. ![]()
It’s not so much the breed, as it is that they’re specially trained to attack intruders. Yours have probably only been trained to knock visitors over so they can give kisses
.
Thanks for the link, glitch 99. I loved it!
Sure, the looters are mostly local. They are looters because of their economic situation, not because they are evil people.
Were they raised to be ok with looting? Many were.
If the same people were raised in the burbs and with money would they loot? Almost certainly not.
So we have a situation where there was a spark, the tinder was extra dry because of the COVID shutdown and the base economic situation of some of the area involved was lower (although probably a LOT better off than in other metro areas). Then outsiders came in and riled things up more. At that point we’re in a self-escalating situation which is very hard to get under control.
I think the state leaders did an excellent job with a fairly rapid, fairly measured response. More could have been better or worse – we don’t know, but it could have gone either way.
All people deserve respect.
All people are to presumed innocent until proven guilty (And under this premise, it is ok to put the cop in jail while things get sorted out – he’s been charged and as such, can be sent to jail while maintaining the presumed innocent thing).
I could go on, but I probably said too much already…
It’s amazing it took so long (four days) to take him into custody considering the evidence. And also amazing that that was a record fast speed for taking an officer into custody…
Normal people are regularly taken into custody immediately, before formal charges.
The accessories to the murder are still free, with no charges whatsoever.
My take: The law-abiding protesters are good people bringing attention to a very bad thing.
The situation escalated which in that particular neighborhood, led to locals doing some bad things.
A lot of the escalation happened because of bad-intentioned people coming in from outside to purposely juice things up.
Why didn’t the riots, looting, fires, etc happen at some other time a month ago, a year ago, etc? One reason is that the locals are not bad evil people. They are just good regular people. And a lot of us regular people get caught up in escalations.
I’ll stretch things a bit here, but I think the comparison is valid. Who of us in the US of German ancestry think what happened in the late 1930s and early 1940s in Germany was acceptable? Were the people there any different from the people that emigrated to the US? No! Most were simply caught up in the escalating situation. It was a very few leaders in Germany that got things riled up.
It is very easy for a skilled initiator to get people all juiced up and start doing things that they would never have even considered doing… a month ago, a year ago…
And then it becomes easy for outsiders to look at the whole situation and think negative thoughts about ALL of the participants.
I’ll repeat: The locals are just regular good people. Most have jobs, pay taxes, support local businesses, have families and obey the law day in and day out.
Can we give that a “Maybe”? I’m not knowledgeable in this area, but it seems that cops are granted special consideration in their ability to use force. So in a way, it could also be amazing that he was taken into custody so quickly!
To make sure folks are clear on my position: Based on the video, it seems quite likely the cop did something very wrong and should have been charged and put in jail.
Yeah. In police procedurals, they always try to trick the cop into going into an area where they’ll be voluntarily disarmed before they arrest, rather than sending swat to kick their door down at home.
Not to ruin your day, but it’s not just one particular neighborhood. It was many cities across the country last night, in at least the tens of cities. (And some have already started midday today.)
They seem to start out completely peaceful the first couple days in most cities, then it devolves as the opportunists move in (there’s been uhaul-trucks for some of the looting) after seeing that there’s a crowd of people they can hide in – or in the case of some, that they can wreak havoc with the intention of pinning it on the protesters.
I don’t subscribe to the economic situation excuse. My grandparents used food stamps for years, grew as much as possible of their own food over their small backyard. My mom would get a sweater and two pairs of socks as sole Christmas presents because they could not afford anything not useful. Yet, they never stole a thing, looted or rioted.
So I don’t buy the excuses making it sound like they had no choice but to riot and loot. The line between lawful and criminal conduct is pretty clear to all. It IS a choice to riot and loot, not an inescapable fate.
It’s all the more frustrating that it distracts from the legitimate protesting against deep-rooted racism. It also provides a good excuse to gloss over the issues which would be a shame. Even if the cop knew Flyod, it’s not exactly an isolated incident. Just look how the Ahmaud Arbery case was handled in Georgia. But the rioting, destruction, and looting is something that will also financially hurt communities further at a time when budgets and incomes are low already.
The plural of anecdote is not data! Sure, there are lots of poor people who wouldn’t loot. It’s been pretty widely accepted that poor people commit more crimes than those better off.
I agree on the distraction point you raise.
