Alliant Credit Union

Look, it’s posted on the back of every bathroom stall in their office. Plenty of notice.

What a shame that this credit union has become a shell of what it once was. It used to be a rate leader and had some innovative offerings for its time. Now there’s very little reason to hold an account.

The Suze Orman partnership was the beginning of the end. Well that, and “Mr. Mooney” (as Shin would lovingly refer to him as) retiring from Alliant. Speaking of which, I wonder what our old friend is up to nowadays.

Yes, a lot of us have been here since I don’t know when. Alliant CU was one of our favorite! Shinobi was also… times are changing. I was one of the first that was kicked out or off. Never really knew why but I expected it was because I was gaining more from Alliant than they wished. Anyway, it’s onward we go.

Alliant is offering a 4.30% 12-17 month CD right now. About the only positive to it at this moment.

As for notification of the credit card change to 1.6%, it’s not until September 1, so they may send out notice in August.

Gift cards have stips only. Millions are out there

Got my new Citi card. Also posted on Wallet and Apple Pay!! Thanks

Secure messaging link is gone from the web site. I had a conversation about an issue going there, for quite some time (it was taking them more than a month to reply!). Found a messaging icon in the app, replied there, and got an automated reply that “this channel is no longer monitored and will be removed at the end of the month”!! (And I also got an email notification that a secure messaging reply is available, and to login to the website to access it!) Of course there was no notification anywhere that this was being removed, and no way to save any messages. What a mess. If indeed the Visa rewards are changing - bye-bye Alliant.

I think I read they’re replacing it with live chat, Mon-Fri 7am-8pm CT https://www.alliantcreditunion.org/help/contact

By the way it’s still not clear whether the rewards are changing for existing customers. There was no official announcement (no notice and nothing on the August statement) and there’s a thread on reddit suggesting that the original rep might’ve been wrong (in that only new accounts would get the 1.6% rate and old ones would keep 2.5%) or maybe the people in charge changed their mind due to customer backlash.

Speaking of branch doors, Alliant closed the last bunch of branches in 2018. It’s online-only.

Alliant says there’s been no change to my account and I’ll still receive 2.5% with $1K in checking.

Seems like either the rumor was wrong or they backtracked.

This was after I removed the $1K from checking and stopped using the card, putting all my monthly payments on a 2% card. They gave me no assurance it would remain at 2.5% and said a decision is pending. The website doesn’t say what the rewards are on the card.

It does say next to your account: “Tier One Rewards earning 2.5%”

Looks like those of us who already had the card are grandfathered in earning the 2.5% cashback (if you meet the requirements), but for who knows how long. On the main public website, they no longer mention this card. The only one that is mentioned is the Visa Platinum which doesn’t have any cashback.

Nobody knows how long we’ll be grandfathered. The card was taken off the main site and blocked for new applications end of June, ~2 weeks before the cashback nerf rumors appeared. More recent reddit posts claim that Alliant says a decision regarding this card is pending.

That’s kind of like what US Bank did with their 4% cashback card. First stop new applications and later nerfed it even for existing customers with the card.

Maybe Alliant figured they can wing it with 2.5% cashback a little longer since they’re not bleeding too much money compared to transaction fees they’re getting plus the occasional interest they get from the customers carrying a balance. And that loss was worth not having a massive customer exodus. For now.

Just received the email from Alliant. The 2.5% tier removed. Everything is 1.5%.
