They bought out some bank in Chicago called PrivateBank in 2017. Feels really similar to RBC’s move to buy City National Bank a few years ago. Both banks’ US arms specialize in high net worth individuals although CIBC dipped its toes into the online savings account/CD game.

Like I said, I’ve had nothing but good things to say about them. I got an account two-ish years ago when they were running a $300 bonus for opening an account. I debated closing it about a year ago, but am glad I hung onto it with all the negative changes at Alliant.

And BMO buying Harris, and TD with Banknorth. TD has gone on a rampage lately, with First Horizon and Cowen.

To tangentially bring this on topic …

TD’s savings rate is .02%
BMO-Harris savings rate is .02%, with a $10 monthly fee. :upside_down_face:

And if you live in a high-tax state like California, the tax equivalent yield can be ~10% more

The 8-week hit 3.20%.

To me the 8-week has been slightly less interesting, because the rates have been rising and will likely rise again at least two more times, and the spread between 4 and 8 weeks isn’t big enough, so the combined yield is almost the same. For example:

  • 8-week: 9/13-11/8 @ 2.816%
  • 4-week: 9/13-10/11 @ 2.54% + 10/11-11/8 @ 2.967%

So even though the 8-week is 3.2% today, in 4 weeks the FED will  0.75% and the 4-week could be at 3.4% or higher, again close to break-even with the 8-week. The 8-week (or longer) would make more sense if it had a significantly higher yield than 4-week and there was no expectation of rate increases.

Looks like the Elements Financial Credit Union Helium Savings promo at 3.25% has been discontinued. The account page now shows the non-promo 1.00% rate for balances above $2,500. I believe the promo guaranteed the 3.25% rate for 1 year for anyone who signed up.

Other updates:

I did open this acct at the 3.25% rate which is fantastic for now. Hopefully, they will raise rates when the fed does it again. Who knows??? But I learned to jump on these fast just because a small credit union like this can get overwhelmed. When I put in transfer requests it comes back as Eli Lilly Credit Union. I did my due diligence and Element took over a few years ago. You would think that would have been changed!! I have had their 4% checking acct for 3 months and all is well. I have 2 AMEX cards and set up auto-pay for the 15 debits monthly. I do 17 and not one payment over 2.00. The drawback of the Helium is that you are only allowed to transfer (internal or external) 5000.00 per transfer up to 2 per 24 hours.(1k) I had to call to find out why my 33k was returned to my bank after 4 days. So now Ill send in 2 5k transfers to get funds in there every other day to be sure. Still at 3.25% for existing accts.

Not to mention that with banks rapidly changing rates it is a giant pain in the behind to keep opening new accounts to rate chase. 4 week t-bills with reinvestment turned on is a no brainer in California right now…

Someone on r/churning did rough math of 6% APY with the promo that 3c3 posted; not sure if it is correct.
