If that’s the case, this proof of total ineptitude is really gonna piss me off. Last time around one criticism of the 1st stimulus was that it was not targeted towards those who needed it the most. Excuse given was that we don’t have time to do something better than send everyone $1200 regardless of need. It would have taken weeks or months we did not have. Fair enough. Our systems are antiquited and chaotic, that’s the best we can do in a hurry.
That was in March. We’re nearly in August. What was the excuse for not getting things ready to provide a less costly and more targeted stimulus? Everybody just sat on their asses until " damn, the unemployment boost is running out next week… Let’s get to work in earnest to make up for all the time we spent doing nothing but posturing."
I forgot that we were going to be rocking again by July so we did not need to improve things for a second round…
That’s only helpful if they never had infections (unless you think people sneaking across the border with covid-19 is the source of all the new cases, not community spread). But they did start with infections and had community spread.
Is there a correlation between Communist countries having a lower infection rate (due to dictatorships being able to be stricter on their people) than most “free” countries?
My wife talks about Vietnam having almost no cases and I tell her it’s because of that. She disagrees. But you look at America and we have anti-mask people who believe the government is trying to control their freedoms.
Asian countries have low cases because they wear masks all the time already even for the common cold. And yes because they’re cultrually probably more inclined to agree with and obey government mandates (this is a broad generalization.)
S. Korea and Japan have low rates and they are not communist.
Also technically VIetnam and China are not at all really ‘communist’. China doesn’t even have unemployment insurance or any kind of decent minimum wage and they’re minting billionaires left and right. Thats not how communism works.
They’re just dictatorships that were communist at some point. They’ve transitioned into hybrid and open market capitalism with lots and lots of government ownership and meddling. Its some sort of weird quasi capitalist dictatorship fascist state now.
It is very helpful to be a remote island. The escalation in NZ looks the same as WA state her ein the US. They both shut schools at about the same time. NZ can close their borders and contain it more easily. US states can’t.
Yes NZ did the right things but being a remote island absolutely helped. Similary look at Hawaii.
I have no doubt that this is true. Even though China probably lied through their teeth about much of their infection and death rates, their lockdowns were pretty severe. And while Taiwan and South Korea are not Communist, they’re under a consistent threat from their Communist neighbors and are better prepared for biological warfare, and have tighter control over their populations (as do places like Vietnam and Thailand).
Communism also explains why there are no cases in North Korea or Turkmenistan, and why the death rates are so low in Russia and Belarus. The data is falsified and incomplete .
Following in the tradition of the DC mayor and ?council?, Dr. Fauci seems to have a double standard for mask wearing. A rule for him, and one for everyone else.
I think it’s more that (some of) the media and a lot of individuals have too high of a standard for mask wearing. Obviously he has one with him. And I dont recall him ever claiming that everyone should be wearing a mask all the time.
That scenario seems like a pretty good example of why so many are against these blanket mask mandates. Context is what defines necessity, not merely “leaving your house”.
I agree. I think it shows context is important and that we can still find ways to enjoy life without letting wearing a mask be a deal breaker. That’s from someone who has been grocery shopping weekly with her 3-layer mask on and hated every minute of the experience. Literally the best part of each trip is getting into my car and removing that damn thing!!!
That pic looks like it’s outdoors at a ballpark, looks like there is some distancing around his group (empty rows around them). It’s summer and he has a water bottle on his lap. If he’s with wife and relative, give me a break. I betcha someone was just waiting until he drinks to snap a shot showing him not wearing a mask for a minute. That seems cheap to me. If we could get everyone to be as reckless as Dr. Fauci, I’m pretty sure we’d be in a much better shape.
Online food buying is so darn perverse. Millions of people are doing it. But that does not seem to help.
Garlic
The Gilroy crop is supposed to be coming in about now. No luck so far locating a local (to Gilroy) online seller. Perhaps something will turn up. Meanwhile have a jar of minced coming in from Walmart. It’s not the same thing. Not even close.
Onions
Have 25# of the Texas 1015s coming in quite soon. Vidalias now unavailable.
Log Cabin syrup
Walmart: no. Target: yes.
Slaw dressing: Found it at Walmart
A good day yesterday as a local provider delivered a beautiful, large, head of red cabbage. Made cole slaw this morning. Now in freezer. Came out good. But now need more slaw dressing.
Also in that same delivery: lettuce, potatoes, green beans,
Obtaining pandemic food without visiting supermarket is a real adventure. Keeps me hopping.
Last weekend needed eggs. It’s bad when you run out of eggs. Found some at one of those “mini-mart” places that also sells gasoline. Got there at 6:00 am Sunday morning. Figured not many customers at that hour. Bad luck. Just before I pulled in this younger guy in pickup truck does so and goes in unmasked. I sat in the car waiting for him to leave. He does, I go in and buy my two dozen eggs, paid with a CC, and they want me to sign with their pen, same one every customer uses. Bad totem.
I signed, returned home, and am now on sixth day of hoping to be OK. So stupid of me. Would not do that again. It’s just not worth the risk. If I’m still well next weekend will know I got away with it. Hoping for the best.
What is it, a thousand people dying each day in the USA? Don’t want to join 'em/
When you go shopping, you must wear gloves along with the mask. Then signing would not be as big a problem. I’m sure you washed well at home after trip. So no worry!
My husband is overly cautious as you are. But I say, do the best as we can & so far, so good…
Don’t overly worry or that might cause other problems. Take care, as we look forward to your food report every so often. I’ll be watching for those Gilroy garlic to be ready.
Agreed. I did have a glove on my left hand to allow me to open the door of the store. Did not see coming need for glove on right hand.
It was one of those electronic signing pads. The pen is attached. Many stores have done away with those and there is no need at all to sign. No way should they be requiring everyone to touch and use the same electronic pen in a pandemic. Should have complained. What’s the use. Took my eggs and left. At least the checkout person who waited on me was wearing a mask. I would not want his job.
Caution level is determined by individual circumstance. In my case high caution is prompted by too many comorbidities. Too often have trouble breathing, even though pretty sure it’s not the COVID-19. Other considerations. I’m OK, but COVID-19 added to existing situation could be concrete block that breaks camel’s back.
