Does the coronavirus merit investment, or personal, concern or consideration?

Now you’re just making up crap to concoct a defense for your contradictions. There’s either a vaccine or there isnt; when asking if you’ll take a vaccine, absolutely no one is asking about some herbal therapy miracle “cure” claim that may help kinda like a vaccine sort of a little maybe. They’re talking about a vaccine, that’s approved as a vaccine, that’s produced as a vaccine, that’s sold as a vaccine, that’s administered as a vaccine. That is what they’re asking you about.

I’m not making up anything and I haven’t made a single contradiction.

You do know that the word “vaccine” does not mean “a vaccine with FDA approval”, right? If I recall correctly, the question was not “will you take an FDA-approved vaccine”, the question was something like “will you take a vaccine if the president says it’s ready”. And the answer was something along the lines of “yes if it is approved and reviewed by science, but if not approved/reviewed but touted by the president, then no”. This was the gist of the answer and was then explained and re-explained without any change of that original meaning. And if people are too dull to understand that, not much can be done.

Oh come on. The question is quite obviously asking about an honest to god vaccine, and whether you trust Trump’s FDA’s approval process.

Absolutely no one is asking you if Trump suddenly says “Dill pickles will prevent you from getting Covid19, like a vaccine”, will you run out and inhale a bucket of pickles. And if you think they are, you are the prototype example of “the problem”.

You’ve just described about 40% of likely voters.

The President of Poland tested positive for covid-19 on Saturday.

He apologized to people he came into contact with, who now have to quarantine. Good example for a US President?

Oh no, the Polish government is not to be exemplified.

The conservative government removed and replaced a bunch of judges that weren’t conservative enough, then rammed through this unpopular ruling down everyone’s throat (and up their hoo ha). We’ll be in the same situation soon enough.

Oh come on right back at you. Here’s the original question that started this side-conversation:

She [Harris] did not say that she would not take it and did not discourage other people from taking it if the science says we have an effective vaccine. Here’s the VP debate, question and answer start at 28:20. I don’t recall exactly whether she made any other statements about vaccines before the debate, but I suspect that even if she did, it had the same meaning – (a) I will follow the science and will be the first in line to take the vaccine if that’s what the doctors say, and (b) Trump is a liar and cannot be trusted on anything. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

I stand by my statement that Harris is dangerously irresponsible.

For life to get back to normal Dr. Anthony Fauci and other experts say that most of the people who can be vaccinated need to be vaccinated, but half of Americans now say they wouldn’t take a vaccine if it was released now. If the Trump administration approves a vaccine, before after the election, should Americans take it and would you take it?
14:10 HARRIS If the public health professionals, if Dr. Fauci, if the doctors tell us that we should take it, I’ll be the first in line to take it. Absolutely. But if Donald Trump tells us that we should take it, I’m not taking it.

This is a false comparison. What if both say she should take it, now what? What about the people who have been told all summer not to trust the CDC and the FDA because they’re all political pawns of Trump and so anything they say is by extension from Trump and not the scientists?

12:46 HARRIS Let’s talk about respecting the American people. You respect the American people when you tell them the truth.

Well they told the American public there was a pandemic and they hoarded toilet paper so I’m not sure telling them the truth is the best policy. Trump basically said he was optimistic in his early comments on the pandemic because the policy people told him not to panic people. Panicking people are even stupider than usual.

My view is that when you’re looking at an upcoming public vaccination program which will succeed or fail based on adoption rates (unless you’re willing to take a China approach of vaccinating everyone at gun point when the time comes), you should be disallowed from publicly questioning the safety of the vaccine in a political context.

Vaccine safety is a scientific issue and you let the scientists work that out. Kalama doesn’t know anything about vaccine safety, why should I care what she thinks? Because her irresponsible statements may end up killing me or a vulnerable loved one.

It’s just like how the media doesn’t cover suicides. Media coverage has been shown to lead marginal unstable people to kill themselves when they wouldn’t otherwise in the wake of articles in the news (that normalize the deceased’s actions), especially in those who are more similar and can relate to that person’s circumstances. It’s bad public health policy to cover this and so they don’t, even tho they would get more clicks for celebrity deaths and so forth. If they didn’t do this voluntarily, I would support restrictions on their free speech on public health grounds. The left is fine with social media suppressing non-covid Anti-Vax right wing views (which are stupid admittedly), but they play up Anti-covid-Vax left wing ones.

Vaccines are the same thing. You need a media message that’s “we hope to have a good vaccine soon, we’re working on it, we’ll have the scientists present the data when they’re ready” and leave it at that, perhaps with occasional updates on timelines, encouraging and publicizing vaccine trials looking for volunteers, etc. instead the left made it political and they’re going to kill people unnecessarily.

I was surprised by the Poland abortion stats reported in that article.

The nation, which already had some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe, will now only allow the procedure in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life in danger… Around 98% of abortions in Poland had been conducted as a result of fetal defects…

If those figures are correct, I’d think they have a very effective public policy and social attitude towards abortion. Who wants a bunch of defective kids, especially if the parents don’t want them either? Further restricting abortion at that point seems like very poor public health policy regardless of other concerns.

In the US, the vast majority of abortions are cited for reasons that basically come down to “I don’t want to” on the part of the mother, and under 10% cited maternal or fetal health concerns, with defects under 4%. I’m not saying we should be restricting abortions, but there’s a lot more foolish unintended pregnancies in the US that are ended in abortion when they could have been more easily prevented with contraception.

This is a couple months old, but an interesting read none the less.

Officials at the Wadsworth Center, New York’s state lab, have access to C.T. values from tests they have processed, and analyzed their numbers at The Times’s request. In July, the lab identified 872 positive tests, based on a threshold of 40 cycles. With a cutoff of 35, about 43 percent of those tests would no longer qualify as positive.

I stand by my statement that no one is more irresponsible than Trump and he has enabled the killing of Americans by covid-19 more than anyone.

No one should take Trump’s word for anything. Almost every week for the last year he has said the coronavirus pandemic was ending and that a vaccine was around the corner. He lies and lies and lies and lies, continually. He deliberately cripples the CDC and government agencies and scientists who have the knowledge and experience to deal with this. He declares he knows more than everybody when he clearly knows nothing and has been wrong nearly 100% every step of the way. He puts political operatives in scientific agencies to watch the scientists and tell them what they can and cannot say. He has politicized medicine, science, pandemic relief (or non-relief) and is one of the most disgusting, irresponsible human beings on the planet.

How is it you do not see this?

What is the White House plan for dealing with this? Get rid of health care?

America’s Daily COVID-19 Case Count Hits All-Time

COVID-19 infections in the U.S. hit more than 83,000 daily cases on Friday, the highest daily tally in the nation since the pandemic began.

The grim news followed President Donald Trump’s declaration Thursday at the debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden that America is “learning to live” with COVID-19 and that it’s “[going away](222,000 Dead, But Trump Says America Is 'Learning To Live With' Coronavirus | HuffPost Latest News).”

The troubling surge threatens to bring the worst suffering from the disease to date. COVID-19 has claimed nearly 224,000 lives in the U.S. so far. Almost 8.5 million Americans so far have been infected.

In the past two weeks, 24 states have broken their single-day case records, The Washington Post reported. COVID-19 hospitalizations increased in 38 states over the past week. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 had already risen 40% in the past month. Deaths have regularly surpassed 1,000 in recent days, and it’s expected the daily toll will climb higher.

The geographic sweep of the surge threatens catastrophic shortages of supplies, medical staff and hospital beds.

“One key way we got through previous waves was by moving health-care workers around. That’s just not possible when the virus is surging everywhere,” Eleanor J. Murray, an epidemiologist at Boston University, told the Post.

In addition, “we are starting this wave much higher than either of the previous waves. And it will simply keep going up until people and officials decide to do something about it.”

The surge is occurring as the nation heads into colder months, with more people staying indoors, especially during the holidays. The approaching flu season will exacerbate the health crisis."

Yesterday Trump attacked the news media for focusing on the number of cases of Covid-19, called it FAKE again and said it’s a conspiracy. Is this a sane, intelligent approach to dealing with an epidemic sickening millions of Americas and killing hundreds of thousands? How could anyone listen to or vote for this person?

How does it make America great when the President campaigns against preventive measures and the US has absolutely the world’s world’s worst response to the pandemic in terms of illness and death and continued spread?

This is people learning to live with it. When a majority of those infected don’t even know they’re infected, using “grim”, “catastrophic”, “disastrous”, and other buzzwords is in fact pushing more of a hoax than reality.

It boils down to either being consumed by irrational fear, or looking at the actual risks and deciding if that risk is acceptable when getting on with your life. You can continue to obsess over fear if you want, but that doesn’t invalidate those who have decided that this obsession over avoiding potential exposure (not even actual infection) at all costs is stupid.

The problem is that there is reality and then there is Trump-fetishist alt-reality. It underlines every conversation here and elsewhere and COVID is just the main disease. It’s also a very dangerous sign because a significant part of our country no longer believes in what should be widely accepted truths. The Know Nothing party is back.

Who are they going to worship when Trump goes down in flames? Don Jr.? Ivanka?

Same could be said about the media hype fetishist alt-reality.

But I know, anyone who disagrees with your take is either mislead or dumb. If you believe it, it must be right, and if it’s right then anything else must be wrong. Why can’t everyone see that!

Yeah, hospitalization numbers and deaths are just a hype alt- reality…
Bankrupt small businesses are just a hype alt-reality.
Unemployment is just a hype alt-reality.

I don’t know for sure, but I was told that hospitalizations in the US now are counted for being in the hospital and having covid, including for example when a pregnant lady or a car crash accident victim shows up for a totally unrelated reason and tests positive even if they don’t have symptoms or ever need any treatment related to covid. If they go back for another problem, they’re probably another hospitalization! Early on you needed to be in the hospital for covid related symptoms.
