Does the coronavirus merit investment, or personal, concern or consideration?

"In Georgia, members of a state Senate subcommittee who attended Thursday’s hearing with Giuliani were advised to quarantine.

“Little did I know that the most credible death threat that I encountered last week was Trump’s own lawyer,” Jen Jordan, a Georgia Democratic state senator who met with Giuliani, tweeted Sunday afternoon. “To say I am livid would be too kind. Sham senate hearing was travesty of justice. Now impact might go far beyond that.”"

Fair warning:

Here comes another one of shin’s food posts.

Food is not a hot topic on this thread, but I think acquisition thereof still relates strongly to the pandemic. Personally I continue to refuse to enter a grocery store, even with the Fauci masking I described up thread.

Anyway, I’m the OP so I can declare on topic anything I want. And besides, I had a great day acquiring food:

I contacted the store manager of a major grocery store located about twenty miles distant and in another state. He allowed me to make payment, over the telephone, using a credit card. He took the payment personally which was a bit over $200.

I went for case quantities of (for me) mission critical staples, to wit, frozen blueberries, salt-free peanut butter and beets, Wheatena. These items have been either difficult to buy at all, or very expensive, from my other sources. I paid over the weekend and did a contact free, outdoor, pickup this afternoon. It all went very smoothly.

Instacart, as you would anticipate, services this store heavily. But buying as I did allowed me to pay shelf prices, which are somewhat lower than Instacart prices for any item, without having to enter the store. Also, I live too far away from the store for Instacart home delivery. My zip is not serviced.

Anyway, it was a good day. The approach I used would not work for “onesy twosy” purchases. You need Instacart for that. But the case quantities I was buying facilitated things.

Incidentally, I had to wait for certain items to arrive. The department managers with whom I worked on the order side warned me that, because of the pandemic, certain stuff they order in from their warehouse simply does not show up because it is OOS even at the warehouse. But patience won the prize and eventually everything came in. It’s a good feeling to have 36 pounds of blueberries in the freezer. That should last me a couple of months. Which reminds me:

Strictly because of the pandemic I doubled my freezer capacity. It seemed like a good idea. I removed from service my two existing chest freezers, both still in working condition. They are now my backup. I added two new chest freezers, both now fully loaded. I like having a number of smaller freezers rather than one (or two) large ones because loss of a large freezer can mean a world of hurt if it cannot be replaced right away. I had to wait a couple of weeks for each of the new freezers I just bought to arrive. Word I got was that, once again, the delivery delay was on account of the pandemic. But there was no emergency so no loss of food. And I was able to acquire freezers I liked, both having the LED lights inside the lid which illuminate when you open it. Very handy.

If you need home appliances, or think you soon might, consider shopping for them earlier rather than later, if for no other reason just to get the lay of the land and scope out availability.

You do realize that’s pretty much what everyone has told you to do since day 1? I’m glad you finally gave it a chance, even though you can probably arrange the same thing at that store online (including those “onesy twosy” purchases). Every Walmart does it, and all the grocery chains around here offer something similar.

I checked on that. The store where I did my case quantity purchases does not support the sort of onesy twosy buying that WalMart, for example, does. They rely on Instacart to handle that sort of thing for them. That was the beauty of my buy. I did not need to pay the Instacart premium and I still was able to obtain what I wanted on a contact-free basis.

Nope. Store does not offer online purchases . . . . except through Instacart.

Pursuant to what glitch99 posted:

We all are aware of online food purchases, with contact free pickup for all and/or home delivery depending where you live, offered by Walmart and by Target. They both sell direct and do not go through, or rely on, Instacart.

What other grocery stores do that, glitch99?

I mean, with Instacart you have additional cost. You have the Instacart premium item by item, you have the tip, and there is their charge to “support the platform”. It adds up. I avoided all those extra costs today, paying exactly what my food would have cost me had I actually entered the store and gone through checkout. Pretty sweet. :grinning:

We are also all aware of the crapshoot that is having a Walmart/Target employee pick “fresh” vegetables and fruits. My very covid-aware wife still braves Walmart and Harris Teeter, albeit first thing in the morning.

Theoretically, first thing in the morning is before they get too crowded, and their shelves are stocked. One out two ain’t bad - at least the stores aren’t crowded. :upside_down_face:

Supply chain still a mess(That’s why vaccine makers have been lowering production estimates), and still adding confusion at every chance to disrupt the fight against the virus.

“Frankly, I don’t know, and frankly, I’m staying out of this. I can’t comment,” Slaoui said. “I literally don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” asked anchor George Stephanopoulos.

“Yes,” Slaoui said.

“But you’re the chief science adviser for Operation Warp Speed,” Stephanopoulos pressed.

Slaoui was similarly dismissive when asked about the executive order in another interview Tuesday, telling Fox News that “what the White House is doing is what the White House is doing.”

Here is the FDA analysis of the PFE vaccine. It appears to be very effective, even after the first dose (see chart on page 30).

https://www.fda.gov/media/144245/download

Do note that it takes 1.5-2 weeks for your body to make antibodies after getting exposed, ie the first shot in the case of a vaccination, so you won’t be protected until after that period.

NYT as is typical manages to omit that the US still has the option in their contract to buy another 500M doses, it’s just that they didnt preorder all of those given the stage of the trial at that time. As for the priority of who would get those doses, if we decide we want more of them, that’s what the latest executive order is for.

AZN update on their vaccine trial. Not sounding as good as the mRNA ones.

Review of the increasing evidence supporting early use or preventative use of ivermectin, a well understood and long used anti-parasitic drug. One excerpt below of many discussed. Many places in S. America are using ivermectin and seeing good results.

A fascinating study on the protective role of ivermectin in nursing home residents in France was recently published which found that in a facility that suffered a scabies outbreak, all 69 residents and 52 staff were treated with ivermectin (87). During the time period surrounding this event, 7/69 residents fell ill with COVID-19 (10.1%). In this group with an average age of 90 years, only one resident required oxygen support and no resident died. In a matched control group of residents from surrounding facilities, they found 22.6% of residents fell ill and 4.9% died.

It was second quarter they turned down an option (not even a commitment). And it was after the results showing it was effective. Just because trump or a stooge claimed something that you quoted doesn’t mean it’s true. Pfizer has been clear.

PFE was trying to get a bigger commitment than the 100M that were guaranteed under Warp Speed as long as they eventually passed the FDA. That’s back in the summer when they only had very early trial data, and the US declined to agree to buy more at that stage, but still has the option on more if they want it. Currently the US will be getting the current and Q1 production from the main PFE plant in Michigan, but they then subsequently promised the Q2 production to various other countries.

Some jerk since then passed an order that could force their hand on the Q2 production’s allocation, putting American lives first.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive orderthat attempts to give Americans priority for Covid-19 vaccines that his administration helped bring to market. The government has provided billions of dollars to drugmakers to aid in vaccine development and production.

“I don’t know what the legal authorities are. I suspect that there are authorities that the administration could invoke that would break some agreements that Pfizer or other companies might’ve struck with other countries,” Gottlieb said before the signing.

Trump was threatening to use the Defense Production Act to compel them to use their (domestic) production and sell it to the US instead of abroad. Given the US is already paying about double what the EU and others are getting those doses for, I suspect this is just the latest round of haggling over what price the US will pay for the extra capacity they may want to buy given the final FDA review / trial results.

Either way, I have no doubt there will be more than enough vaccines for everyone in the US by the end of Q2. Which ones and exactly how effective those turn out to be will depend on the additional results out of JNJ, AZN, NVAX, etc, which we should have in about a month or so.

But the real news was that Sigfried and Roy performed the nasal swabs. :sunny:

Imagine the right-wing outrage if Biden said something like this.

Just a note: There is no clear evidence getting and surviving the virus confers immunity. There are many cases of reinfection. As an example of virus problems, there is no flu immunity and not even herd immunity despite a flu vaccine. So it’s not clear even a corona virus vaccine will stop the virus.

As usual, Trump is just making stuff up.
