Does the coronavirus merit investment, or personal, concern or consideration?

The (counterintuitive) argument for vaccinating younger people over older is because the younger ones are more like to be spreaders than the olde ones, who stay home and interact with fewer people. There was a good article in Wired about it recently. It claimed you could knock out the virus by vaccinating as little as 14% of the population, as long it was the ones most likely to spread it.

I imagine it will be vastly politically impossible, since it would require you to first vaccinate the irresponsible 20 year old fat bro who goes to parties, and not his 90 old grandmother.

Right, that’s the best argument for frontline workers or similar. But I think that would be a lot more applicable to the situation early in the pandemic than now. I know some people who didn’t care or didn’t take precautions back in the Spring, and they all got covid by now. So in that sense, the most likely super spreaders are also the most likely to have already gotten the disease and be immune at this point. There were some academic models of how this effect would slow down initial spreading rate of the virus I posted a while back.

The acquaintance vaccination model they talked about was kinda interesting as a way to approximate the social network without actually knowing it, ie ask each person for 1 friend they think should be vaccinated and the collective choices are likely to be those with the most contacts.

Meanwhile, covid kills in mysterious ways. Add one more to the body count.

The head of BNTX, the company that came up with the vaccine PFE is using, telling it like it is.

He’s an excellent scientist and very credible (unlike the head of PFE who’s been playing politics with his vaccine trials and has shown himself to be untrustworthy on any potentially political matters).

That’s not even all that counterintuitive. But the problem is, the vaccine is shown to prevent people from becoming symptomatic. They may continue spreading it as they have all along, that remains unknown.

And they say Pfizer is drop shipping vaccines directly to the end user/local level. Not sure how much Federal planning there’s even room for in that process…

But just ignore all that. Trump sucks and has screwed up the process. It’s Trump so it must be true. Fact checked.

he also said that his vaccine should be easy to modify to combat mutations (unlike the live virus methods) . He’s not unbiased though. The mRNA method might work against cancer etc too.

could be delerium/cabin fever being cooped up with another person. Overcrowding death…

maybe so, maybe not. if only they were good at designing vaccines as they’re at exporting virus

If you wanted to know why every codon is what it is in the PFE vaccine, this is nearly a blow by blow explanation. One of the best I’ve seen for what everything does. Very good comparisons to software, well worth reading for any programmers as well as any with general interest on how the biology actually works.

LA seeing huge increases, worrying about rationing care in hospitals.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti said a new variant of the coronavirus could be a factor in the recent explosion in coronavirus cases, as well as other factors, including pandemic fatigue, holiday gatherings and winter weather, which may be more conducive to transmission.

“This happened devastatingly quickly. Everybody I talked to said this acceleration was beyond any model and any expectation, so then people say ‘What broke down?’ and I’ve got to think it’s partly the strain that was out there,” Garcetti said in an interview with The Times on Wednesday.

Thank you very much. I’m only a third of the way through it, but they write in a way that even an old farm boy can understand. They could make a fortune as Chingrish re-writers.

Huh? I thought they were masked up and under mandate from their ruling class.

Maybe those 51 characters are the blueprint for Bill Gates’ nanotech RF transceivers?

Vaccination rates by county. Bahrain has been using one of the China vaccines for a month, but Israel is doing very well in terms of speedy rollout.

A little surprised to see China with only ~1 million doses administered so far. I thought they had began vaccinating their health care workers months ago.

I have no idea how accurate the China numbers are and wouldn’t worry about them.

Does anyone here wear protective goggles like these when you are in public? I do but I never see anyone else wearing them. If the Covid virus is spread by an aerosol fog your eyes’ mucous membrane would be a way for it to enter your body.
