Individual Stock Discussions

Bitcoin is straight up this am since Musk says TSLA is investing $1.5B of its corporate cash in Bitcoin.

Quickly, someone give me a list of things that Musk was very wrong about. I can’t like him for this and need to know that he can be wrong.

For those not paying attention today, the GME casino is open again, at least between frequent exchange volatility halts.

TSLA just a quick comparison. It was a few month old, but TSLA stock is about the same, not sure about the others.

xerty, Do you have stock in TSLA?
My DK’s have one. They use it as traveling vehicle for their business. Smart, yes?

No position currently, haven’t be involved in this one for about a year.

NewHold Investment Company (NHIC) is a SPAC (as if the name didn’t make it blindingly obvious) that recently acquired Evolv Technology. Evolv is backed by some big names like Bill Gates and Lux Capital. They make an “AI powered” security screening system for event venues, and I recently started seeing them everywhere. They don’t hold up traffic flow like a traditional metal detector, and require less labor, so they’re bound to be very popular. Evolv holds patents for a number of metal detector, radar scanning, and sensor data analysis technologies and have product variations to meet different screening needs (temp checks, facial recognition, analytics).

Honestly, I have no idea how good the product is (can’t find any data or use by an agency which requires rigorous testing) but it really doesn’t matter since these types of security screenings are mostly for show anyway. No profits yet, but plenty of growth opportunity and I think the AI buzzword will bring some positive attention.

Don’t buy the dip on this yet, they’re not done selling. Investment banks are taking billion dollar losses on their margin loans to this guy.

Any new information today, Xerty?

BNTX bought some today, these are they guys behind the PFE vaccine. Looking like the best in class as the others run into more issues. MRNA and NVAX might be reasonable also along these lines.

These are smaller companies rather than betting on (or against) big ones like PFE, JNJ, AZN since the whole covid thing is a smaller part of their overall business.

So far so good - this call was 4 days ago, which is the jump the morning of the second day on the first 5 day chart, and in the middle of the longer term 10 day chart. In the end I bought BNTX and half as much NVAX, and both are up 20%. Still holding.

You can see positive plays on the better vaccines / viral vector safety risks have done well since the JNJ suspension and risks becoming more clear. MRNA, BNTX (tech behind the PFE vaccine), and NVAX (promising vaccine, different tech than either, not yet approved anywhere) are all up a fair bit and similarly.

The ones behind the less effective, possibly more risky ones (JNJ, AZN) are down slightly vs the biotech index (IBB) while PFE is up slightly. But as I said, those are all giant companies where the impacts of this particular covid vaccine aren’t big components of their business.

PFE beats on revenues, now expecting $26B in vaccine revenues and $6-8B in vaccine profits for 2021 (“definitely not part of Warp Speed”).

If I’m reading this right, vaccine revenues will be roughly 1/3 of all their sales.

Last two weeks, not showing the positive premarket moves for either PFE or BNTX yet:

You can’t post, too many times xerty?. I don’t do stock (I really should have started long ago), but hate to start now. BNTX, I saw it at around $470, is that what you paid?

A couple years ago my son was coaching me on 3-4 good stock. I opened an account with Fidelity $25k. I played or checked every few days. After 6 months my money was a gain of $5k. I decided to quit. took my money, but left $5k in Fidelity. Those funds are still sitting in Fidelity.

One more bad decision - punish the companies who came up with the best tech/vaccines? What is he thinking.

All the pure play vaccine stocks were down 20% on this terrible plan, which gives away the best technology, harms their investors who funded decades of research, and won’t even help with vaccine production since patents aren’t the bottleneck anyway. If you read the discussion below, basically nobody but Biden and maybe a few opportunistic foreign countries think this is a good idea.

Luckily Germany appears to not be going along, so hopefully the WTO waiver process fails.

Plenty of good advice in this, ignore the weird product pitches from time to time.

[In 1992] when I went in to tell Soros that I was going to short a 100% of the fund in the British pound against the Deutschmark, he looked at me with great disdain.

He thought the story was good enough that I should be doing 200%, because it was sort of a once-in-a-generation opportunity.
