This is the year of the credit card nerf. Chase pulled the application for Freedom Flex today. If this is permanent and intentional, Chase won’t have a 5% quarterly card available to new applicants. Hopefully it’ll remain grandfathered like the OG Freedom and Citi Dividend.

Citi has announced the 5% categories on their Dividend card for Q1 2026. Signup begins on 12/15/25:

The Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cards offer 5%/5x points per dollar spent on up to $1,500 each quarter. The categories being reported for Q1 2026 are:
- Dining
- Norwegian Cruise Line
- American Heart Association
Those arent really categories are they? Besides Amazon (which is arguably a category of their own), you dont see too many individual merchants targeted by these quarterly promos.
Not sure if this is an indication Norwegian wants to people to book early, or if they need more people to book at all.
It’s definitely strange, but NCL was also Q1 this year.
Jan-Mar (wave season) is typically very busy/competitive in the cruise industry so it’s not too surprising that NCL would partner with Chase to gives them a slight edge in booking incentives.
And, quick reminder, if you have a Chase Freedom Flex, which earns 3x on dining even in the absence of quarterly bonuses, you should be getting 7x total on dining this quarter, up to $1500 of spend (at least based on past precedent).
They structure it as:
Base: 1x
Bonus due to card’s bonus categories: 2x
Bonus due to quarterly category: 4x
Total: 7x

If you use Paypal in-store QR code to pay at CVS, you get 7x at CVS.
For the first quarter of 2026, Discover cardholders can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent at grocery stores, wholesale clubs, and select streaming services when they activate the offer. This promotion runs from January 1 to March 31, 2026.
