so now they’re coming after the NASA administrator during the their glory days of the Apollo manned moon landing project in the 1960s, James Webb. If the left can remove the names of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln from schools they must figure why not a space telescope?

Now? The name has been controversial for a long time because he’s an administrator rather than a scientist.
What is your evidence for that statement?
Edit. Of course he is an administrator and not a scientist. But among who is it controversial for the telescope to be named after him? And what is the reason for it to be controversial other than he’s not a scientist?
Edit 2. and the reason this particular group states to try to cancel Mr. Webb is that he supposedly had anti-LGBTQwerty policies.
I remember it being controversial long ago. Finding old stuff isn’t easy but I did find a 2015 article complaining about it, although because of his anti-gay position:
As far as I know, it was not his position but it was a policy of NASA and other government agencies.
From my point of view, I, like many young people at the time, was inspired by the Apollo project. Those were truly NASA’s glory days. After Webb left the agency, they totally dropped the ball not only on manned exploration But also the development of rocket and space related technology. It took Elon Musk and SpaceX to shake up the moribund technology.
The Webb telescope is a hugely complex technological project and it owes a lot more to engineers than it does to scientists. I think it’s fitting to be named for someone who was able to organize engineers to accomplish a truly historic achievement.

Oh my, do I feel old, but I guess a high school “graduate” would feel old with that description. 
So, it’s because he is an administrator. That might have some merit … but …
So, it’s not because he’s an administrator. It’s because he didn’t fight the policies of his his bosses/govt.
Although I did not know, or even meet, Webb, I knew a few people who worked for/interacted with him. From my memories, he was respected by the vast majority, primarily because he did what, he thought, was best for the agency, regardless of the fallout. He was also despised by a few, and specifically one who felt he was “gulaged”.
The James Webb controversy shows the issue with naming stuff after people. How many times do we end up in these situations by judging these people by standards of 50+ or 100+ years later?
To be safe, we should just name these observatories after NGC numbers. 
The whole concept of naming stuff after people is purely ego-driven, anyways. Either the ego of the person its named after, or the ego of the people doing the naming. Those wanting the Webb observatory renamed are just as full of themselves as everyone else; the name is just an identifier that becomes synonymous with the characteristics of the place being named, yet so many think it’s the place being named that takes on the characteristics of it’s namesake. If I want to go to an observatory, I go to a good observatory. I dont give two craps what that observatory is called, beyond it being the means of telling others where I’ll be.

Oh give me a break, it was literally a slap to the cheek. These days, nothing, from harassment to offensive to graphic to shocking to violent to traumatic, has a usage bearing any resemblance to it’s actual meaning. Screw the media, and the activists behind the media, for bastardizing our language and making up meanings for words just to push their click-bait narratives.

Where have you been for the past 70+ years? It’s as plain as the nose on your face - Natural Goose Catalog … or without benefiting Googlio, Let me get that for you.
Anything but a reference to dead people with potential skeletons in their closets by ever-changing standards of what’s appropriate now. I think the trend to name these after people started with Hubble. Now it’s like we need to keep finding US astronomers (or even non-scientist NASA admins) to name telescopes. It’s just asking for trouble.
Nobody had any issue with naming missions or probes like Apollo, Voyager, Gemini, Orion, Mariner, Pioneer, Curiosity, or Artemis.
“Telescope 200238437234-D3XM” just doesn’t sound exciting. Or memorable. 
That was just too long but you shorten it to D3XM Telescope. Not any less memorable than Webb telescope. Short and sweet and no risk of anyone complaining about the name. And I don’t know if anyone was excited about Webb Telescope anyway.
And while it’s as-yet unclear what Musk’s plans are with his newfound power within Twitter, it will be interesting to see if Twitter’s censors continue to give Musk trouble for his tweeting given he’s now the company’s largest shareholder. Musk’s stock has already, however, made him “about $1.1 billion,” according Bloomberg.
