That’s what you, shinobi, think. But that is not how everyone perceives the same words.
Also as I pointed out we don’t know where it originated. A conspiracy theorist might say it originated in a terrorist bio lab somewhere else and was transported into China. Like in the movies.
Simply put, there’s absolutely no reason to call the virus “Chinese”, because it creates negative sentiment toward everything else (and everyone) that’s Chinese.
But when I say something, I’m saying what I mean. I’m not sure when it became acceptable for others to insist they know more about what I meant than I do. People can perceive things however they want, it doesnt change the intent; a perception is just an opinion, not fact. Their perception isnt any more valid than my own, especially when trying to force it on me regarding something that I myself said.
But that’s just your perception of what was meant. If that wasnt the intended meaning, then your perception is inherently wrong. Yet instead of apologizing for the misunderstanding and moving on, people double down and essentially bully their way into being right by default, after silencing anyone who dares suggest otherwise.
I agree with you. But perception is important in this case because it leads to actions and conclusions. Being clear about your intent is important if you’re a highly visible public figure like the president, head of CDC, chairman of the FED, etc, etc.
For example, the reason FED meeting notes are so carefully worded (some might say cryptic) is specifically because they are very careful about what they say and how they say it as to not incite unnecessary and unwarranted reactions (i.e., market swings, panic, etc). This is a clever strategy. The president could use that now, even though he’s incapable of carefully explaining anything that isn’t written down, and even then only if he doesn’t diverge from the script.
Anyway, I don’t watch much TV (no CNN anyway) and I haven’t seen these remarks or the reactions to them prior to my post. Yet my post is in agreement with those other reactions. My conclusion is that those reactions were not “created” by the media, they were felt by the people and the media only reported on it.
I watched the video. Most of them said “the Wuhan coronavirus” or “China’s coronavirus”, not “Chinese coronavirus”, and it looks like all these clips are from a time before the virus had an official name or spread to other countries.
We have an official name now and the virus is no longer limited to Wuhan or China. Calling it “Chinese” now has no reasonable justification except to incite negative emotions towards China and everything Chinese. At this rate and with increased testing, in a few days there may be more confirmed cases in Italy and even in the US than in China. Is he gonna call it “Italian” or “American” virus?
You know what else. And this is to everyone posting about this subject who thinks there’s nothing wrong with calling the virus “Chinese.” Unless you are of Chinese descent or have close family members who are Chinese, shut the f*ck up. If you can’t empathize with other people over this issue, you have no right to say anything. (And don’t cite your constitutional right to freedom of speech, it doesn’t protect you from being labeled an idiot or being censored in a public, non-government forum).

We do not all have to genuflect to the “official name” when another one is in common usage and more accurate

Since when are you a mind reader? The term is used by the President because it is more accurate and commonly used. You are the racist who sees everything through a racial lens.

This is a red herring. The number of cases is irrelevant. Viruses are commonly named after the location where they originated. For example, the “ebola virus” is named after the Ebola river in Africa even though there are many more cases far from that river.

You are not on a college campus where you can shout down people who disagree with you. You shut the fuck up if you cannot advance logical and supportable arguments for your position.
Dude, it’s basic geography. This virus first became known to the world while in China. That’s it, it’s that simple. It’s not accusations, it’s not blame. Go ahead and blame the virus for choosing China to make its appearance, if you must. But I’m just stating a fact.
The only reason someone of Chinese decent would be defensive about this is if they somehow do blame themselves/their country for unleashing it on the world. Just like the people who bitch about a bank robber being described as a black man, are those embarrassed that a black man robbed a bank. To everyone else, it’s simply a factual description.
Getting pissed off about this being referred to as the Chinese virus is the only racist tendency in play here. Because thats the only take where race is actually a factor, rather than merely a descriptor.
That’s absurd. Even the president’s most ardent supporters can’t deny he’s specifically using it to deflect blame. “I did everything RIGHT! Thank me! This is a FOREIGN virus! Who could have known? We’ve never seen anything like this throughout ALL of history!” (of course, pandemics HAVE happened before… and the previous admin presented a pandemic scenario during changeover as one of the highest risk/damage events likely to occur and what some of the shortcomings were that needed continued improvement. But there’s no place for facts.)
Aside from agreeing or not on other policy, you’re just pretending if you don’t admit he’s deflecting. He never accepts responsibility for anything. (And even says so in almost those exact words…)
It’s only your perception, and despite what you may think, your perception isn’t the be-all end-all. Other than you, and possibly two other regulars, I don’t know anyone who perceived that Trump was blaming the Chinese people for the virus. That’s because most of the people I know see people - not VCs or people’s race first.
