The 2020 USA POTUS election politics, the civil war, and the world war (Part 1)

I’m sorry that your many friends see things through those colored glasses.

Being offended, angry and lashing out doesn’t equal empathy, shallow or deep. It is more equal to the behavior of a young, shallow, child.

And just what do you mean by “Chinese Americans”? I thought the non-racist, non-homophone, non-snowflake offending word of the day was Asian Americans, n’est-ce pas?

I agree that lashing out is childish, but empathizing to the point of being offended is not. Let’s just say I know what it’s like to be discriminated against for factors beyond my control and having nothing to do with my character. So pardon me for being a little sensitive on behalf of my close friends, who felt that those remarks would incite undue discrimination.

I can’t tell if you’re joking, but if not, I must have missed that memo. I wasn’t talking about all of my Asian American friends, only about those who have Chinese or Taiwanese ancestry. (And let’s not dive into that distinction in this thread as that would be even further off-topic). They use that term themselves and it’s not offensive AFAIK.

As do I. My skin just grew thicker and I followed the old adage about living well. Declaration: I am sorry if/when anyone is discriminated against, or when they feel they’ve been discriminated against.

Half-way

Just don’t call them Indonesians. It was my understanding, as I try to stay abreast of VC offendee lingo, that it’s okay if a member of a VC uses a racist/derogatory word, but no one outside the VC can use it. Thus, unless you are a Chinese American, it is racist of you to use the phrase. Of course, I’m not offended by it.

I’ll mirror Scripta on this one. I am close with a couple non-Chinese Asian Americans that were offended by that particular comment from POTUS not because it was used as a descriptive term but because they felt it inspired ratial prejudice against Asians.

In times like these where hate crimes happen (and they have happened in our area just within the last day or two) they are not pointed directly towards Chinese but towards all Asians, even those born here in America. This POTUS is known on many occasions to fuel that kind of discrimination with ethnic or sex oriented remarks and this was just one more example of it.

You shouldn’t have to ‘grow a thicker skin’ to it. It’s one thing to see it on the streets but we should demand more in this day and age from our government leaders.

I also have an Indonesian friend, and I once again don’t know what you’re talking about

I’m pretty sure “Chinese American” is not an offensive term to anyone. There’s even a wikipedia article for it and I’d think wikipedia would be the first place to fix or at least mention if it was offensive. But you know what, if you insist, I will ask a few of my friends when I get a chance.

Some of my friends from Taiwan, who are a little on the darker side, have been slightly irritated when, in China, they were mistakenly identified as Indonesian … multiple times. They weren’t scared or worried, just irritated. I’ll try to stick to the safe word of Asian. You never know when someone’s going to get offended.

At least he didn’t call it Oriental.

Well to be fair, the “Yellow Fever” was already taken

My view is if they’re going to accuse us of developing and releasing the virus as a biological weapon attack on China, the least we can do is annoy them by referring to it as “Chinese”

(Assuming that it is that this use annoys the Chinese government, and not just the overly sensitive folks in the US)

Here’s a better one. Now it’s not the vaunted … cough, cough … “paper of record” but it’s still in NYC.

First of all, the Post is a FAR more reliable source of unbiased information than the New York Times so-called newspaper. I feel dirty just typing New York Times.

But beyond that and on the point of your post:

Yes, of course anything coming out of China is highly suspect. They are communists. And for enlightened people, that is all that needs to be said. Period.

They’ve been happening, since Cain and Abel.

I disagree, but that’s why we have horse races. No offense to anyone who self-identifies as a horse.

I didn’t have to grow a thicker skin. I could have whined to my parents or demanded something from nanny Sam or anyone else who would listen. I didn’t consider that worthy of my time. Besides, we overcome adversity the same way we overcome failure.

I don’t even hate the people who were ignorant enough to discriminate against me without knowing me. I don’t think about them at all. Now that it’s come up, I only feel sorry for them.

“They felt”. That’s the whole point - assigning intent based solely on how it made you feel. “This made me feel bad, so you must not like me and intentionally wanted to hurt me.”

We’re getting surprisingly close to the point where someone will be able to use a $20 bill to buy a brand new car, simply because they “feel” that it should be enough to cover the $40,000 price tag. And it’ll be allowed, because it wouldd be racist, intolerant, or otherwise offensive to tell them differently. Yes, I’m dead serious.

I’d posit that it’s the reaction to such remarks that fuels the perception of discrimination. Most dont really consider it a knock against chinese people until someone starts crying that it’s a knock against chinese people. Then it merely becomes a case of expecting the squeaky wheel to get the grease.

I agree with his perception of the Times, but I’m not so sure the Post is much of an alternative to illustrate that…

The new ABC News/Ipsos poll now has Trump’s handling of the Chinese virus crisis at 55% positive!! ABC news is an enemy of Trump. I wonder how high that rating would be if the American mainstream media were giving the President a fair shake.

So how, from a most unfriendly source, can that rating be so high? Here is my answer:

People are in their homes watching TV and seeing every day, firsthand and unfiltered by the press, President Trump’s daily press conferences. Trump is an impressive leader. Period. It’s self-evident.

As for the election in November:

I’ve seen it before, in 1984, when Reagan won overwhelmingly. Biden is merely this year’s unlucky Democrat fall guy.

Waahoo!! Positive notice for our President Trump…

Been in my house for almost 2-3 weeks. Went out yesterday for a few groceries. Not bad, lots of fresh vegetables, & ice cream… :yum:

Yup. The leader screaming loudest today is the same guy who runs the largest sanctuary city in America, NYC. He is short medical supplies needed to care for thousands of sick felonious illegal aliens (and other illegals as well) who remain in his city because he refused to cooperate with ICE to facilitate their removal and deportation.

I would say to comrade de Blasio, who also just happens to be a communist sympathizer:

As ye sow so shall ye reap

The guy now wants to use America’s tax dollars to care for the foreign non-citizens he for so long illegally has harbored. Good luck looking for sympathy on that one where real Americans live, Bill, you idiot.

Democrats already are underwater and now are going even deeper through politicization of this Chinese virus. Once again today Trump gave a very strong performance in his news conference. Democrats are trying to say POTUS was slow to react. But when he closed down flights from China to the USA way back at the beginning of February, those very same Democrats called Trump a filthy and hateful xenophobe. This as they were conducting ridiculous impeachment proceedings against him simultaneously.

Democrats truly are the “gang that can’t shoot straight”. Forget presidential prescience at the beginning of February for a moment. Joe Biden, who erroneously thinks he qualifies to become POTUS, criticized Trump as recently as nine days ago for that very same China flight cancellation decision, which has saved countless American lives.

When Obama was elected he promised to put Americans first. What nobody realized at the time is that he was referring to Central Americans!!

He was also the one who facilitated the growth of the epidemic by not shutting down schools until the teachers union was on the brink of walking out anyway. He was busy wringing his hands about the poor kids and their free lunches, instead of worrying about people dying.

I spent a little time trying to determine what happens if Trump gets the virus and passes away . . . . . after coastal America concludes their parades and celebrations, I mean.

Obviously Pence steps in at the top. However, worrying news:

As best I’m able to determine, Pence would nominate a new VP. That person would need to be confirmed by BOTH the Senate (no worries there) AND the House (major trouble!).

Absent both those confirmations, 80-year-old Nancy Pelosi would be next in line of succession.

In normal times, without a deadly virus out there, all that would be wildly far fetched. But given our situation now, loss of both Trump and Pence is not impossible. And the thought Pelosi would roadblock confirmation of Pense’s VP choice, to her own advantage, is not far-fetched in the least.

Perhaps this is the best argument for just letting the virus run it’s course. The leaders and string-pullers of both parties have pretty similar risk profiles, so this might prove to be the most effective means of “draining the swamp”.

I had a good laugh yesterday during Trump’s news conference. At one point a reporter mentioned Mitt Romney was quarantined because of possible virus exposure. Trump is obviously a little busy with important stuff. He was unaware of Romney’s dilemma until the reporter mentioned it.

Trump was unable to suppress a smile upon getting the news, Romney not being exactly a political friend of POTUS. And when Trump smiled, I had a good laugh. Just desserts? Well, that is in the eyes of the beholder. But, like Trump, I’m not shedding any tears in the wake of Romney’s dilemma.
